Wonderful Grace of Jesus

Author: Haldor Lillenas Meter: Irregular Appears in 114 hymnals Topics: Saving Work of Christ Refrain First Line: Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus Lyrics: 1 Wonderful grace of Jesus, greater than all my sin; how shall my tongue describe it, where shall its praise begin? Taking away my burden, setting my spirit free; for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. [Refrain:] Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus, deeper than the mighty rolling sea; higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain, all sufficient for even me; broader than the scope of my transgressions, greater far than all my sin and shame; O magnify the precious name of Jesus, praise his name! 2 Wonderful grace of Jesus, reaching to all the lost, by it I have been pardoned, saved to the uttermost; chains have been torn asunder, giving me liberty, for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. (Refrain) 3 Wonderful grace of Jesus, reaching the most defiled, by its transforming power making me God’s dear child, purchasing peace and heaven for all eternity-- and the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. One Race, One Gospel, One Task

Author: Margaret Clarkson Hymnal: The Worshiping Church #735 (1990) Meter: 14.14.4.7.8 Topics: Saving Work of Christ First Line: One is the race of mankind under sin's condemnation Lyrics: 1 One is the race of mankind under sin's condemnation, one is the gospel that frees us from death's domination; one is our task--sin, death and hell to unmask, showing God's way of salvation. 2 One is the Word that can speak to our fallen condition: Jesus alone can redeem us and give sin's remission. His saving name we must forever proclaim: only in Christ is salvation. 3 One is the task that our Lord to his Church has committed; his is the Spirit by whom for his work we are fitted. No more our own, we serve the Master alone-- Jesus, who won our salvation! 4 One is the hope of eternal rejoicing before us; one is the song we shall share in God's heavenly chorus: till that glad day let us Christ's mandate obey-- tell the whole world of salvation. Scripture: Acts 1:8 Languages: English Tune Title: LOBE DEN HERREN

His boyhood was spent on a farm and in teaching district schools. He spent five years as editor of the local paper at Franklin. He was converted to Christianity at the age of 26 and soon after was business manager and office editor of the "Pentecostal Herald" of Louisville, Ky. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church South. His aim in writing was to incorporate as much Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes. John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: John B. Dykes Topics: Saving Work of Christ Composer of "VOX DILECTI" in The Worshiping Church As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman
