Patrick Prescod

1932 - 2013 Topics: Seasonal and General God's Rule Author of "The Right Hand of God" in Sing a New Song Patrick Prescod was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He was a virtuosic pianist. He studied at Trinity College of Music in London, then returned to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, taught music, led The Kingston Chorale and Cantemus, and worked as the Music Director for the Education Ministry from 1979-1982. He edited the Caribbean hymnal Sing A New Song No. 3. Prescod tried to integrate the familiar cultural features, rhythms, and musical forms into the unfamiliar context of worship. Dianne Shapiro

Noel Dexter

1938 - 2019 Topics: Seasonal and General God's Rule Composer of "[The right hand of God is writing in our land]" in Sing a New Song Noel Dexter was born on December 21, 1938 and grew up in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica. He studied ethnomusicology and church music at the University of West Indies, in the United Kingdom and in the United States. He founded and led the Kingston Singers as well as other theatrical productions. For 25 years he was director of music at the University of West Indies, Mona, While there he lead the University Singers, until 2012, when he retired. Doreen Potter

1925 - 1980 Topics: Seasonal and General For the Young Author of "Jesus, Where Can We Find You?" in Sing a New Song Doreen Potter was born in 1925 in Panama, but lived in Jamaica during her childhood. She studied music at St. Katharine's College in Liverpool, UK and at Trinity College, London. She was a violinist, pianist, and teacher. She married Philip Potter, general secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva. Through her husband she met Fred Kaan and composed tunes for Kaan's texts, as well as other hymn tunes. In 1883-84 he was known for his success in fighting the corrupt Tweed Ring, for arbitrating the Telegraphers' Strike and the Hocking Valley Coal Strike. He attacked John D. Rockefeller, Sr. for giving $100,000 of "tainted money" to the Congregational Church's Foreign Missions program. Throughout his ministry he emphasized applying the gospel to life in America. He wrote "O Master, let me walk with thee" in 1879. Mary Louise VanDyke =================== Gladden, Washington, was born at Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, Feb. 11, 1836; was educated at Williams College: and entered the Congregational Ministry. He was for some time editor of the New York Independent, and of the Sunday Afternoon. In the Sunday Afternoon, his hymn, "O Master, let me walk with Thee" (Walking with God), appeared in 3 stanzas of 8 lines, in March 1879. Dr. Gladden has been Pastor of the First Congregational Church, Columbus, Ohio, since 1882. His hymn-writing has not been extensive. The most popular of his hymns is "0 Master, let me walk with Thee," noted on p. 1565, ii. It has come into somewhat extensive use during the last ten years. Additional hymns in common use include:— 1. Behold a Sower from afar. [The Kingdom of God.] In the Boston Pilgrim Hymnal, 1904, this is dated 1897. 2.
