According to Thy gracious word

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 551 hymnals Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Lord's Supper Lyrics: 1 According to Thy gracious word, In meek humility, This will I do, my dying Lord, I will remember Thee. 2 Thy body, broken for my sake, My bread from heaven shall be; Thy testamental cup I take, And thus remember Thee. 3 When to the cross I turn mine eyes, And rest on Calvary, O Lamb of God, my Sacrifice, I must remember Thee; 4 Remember Thee, and all Thy pains, And all Thy love to me: Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains Will I remember Thee. 5 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and memory flee, When Thou shalt in Thy Kingdom come, Jesus, remember me. Amen. Used With Tune: DALEHURST

City of God, how broad and far

Author: Rev. Samuel Johnson Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 166 hymnals Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Church Lyrics: 1 City of God, how broad and far Outspread thy walls sublime! The true thy chartered freemen are Of every age and clime. 2 How purely hath thy speech come down From man's primeval youth; How grandly hath thine empire grown Of freedom, love, and truth! 3 How gleam thy watch fires through the night With never-fainting ray! How rise thy towers, serene and bright, To meet the dawning day! 4 In vain the surge's angry shock, In vain, the drifting sands: Unharmed upon th' eternal Rock Th' eternal city stands. Amen. The Church's one Foundation

Author: Rev. Samuel J. Stone Hymnal: The Hymnal #333 (1950) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Church Lyrics: 1 The Church's one Foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the word: From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy Bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. 2 Elect from every nation, Yet one o'er all the earth, Her charter of salvation One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued. 3 'Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war, She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore; Till with the vision glorious, Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. 4 Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. Amen. Tune Title: AURELIA

Christ is made the sure Foundation

Author: Rev. John M. Neale; Anon. Hymnal: The Hymnal #336 (1950) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Church Lyrics: 1 Christ is made the sure Foundation, Christ the Head and Cornerstone, Chosen of the Lord and precious, Binding all the Church in one; Holy Zion's help forever, And her confidence alone. 2 To this temple, where we call Thee, Come, O Lord of Hosts, today: With Thy wonted loving-kindness Hear Thy people as they pray; And Thy fullest benediction Shed within its walls alway. 3 Here vouchsafe to all Thy servants What they ask of Thee to gain, What they gain from Thee forever With the blessed to retain, And hereafter in Thy glory Evermore with Thee to reign. 4 Laud and honor to the Father, Laud and honor to the Son, Laud and honor to the Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in might, and One in glory, While unending ages run! Amen. Tune Title: REGENT SQUARE

One holy Church of God appears

Author: Rev. Samuel Longfellow Hymnal: The Hymnal #335 (1950) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Church Lyrics: 1 One holy Church of God appears Through every age and race, Unwasted by the lapse of years, Unchanged by changing place. 2 From oldest time, on farthest shores, Beneath the pine or palm, One unseen Presence she adores, With silence, or with psalm. 3 The truth is her prophetic gift, The soul her sacred page; And feet on mercy’s errands swift Do make her pilgrimage. 4 O living Church, thine errand speed, Fulfill thy task sublime; With Bread of life earth’s hungers feed; Redeem the evil time! Amen. Tune Title: ST. JAMES

William Croft

1678 - 1727 Person Name: William Croft (1678-1727) Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Church Composer (probable) of "ST. ANNE" in The Hymnal William Croft, Mus. Doc. was born in the year 1677 and received his musical education in the Chapel Royal, under Dr. Blow. In 1700 he was admitted a Gentleman Extraordinary of the Chapel Boyd; and in 1707, upon the decease of Jeremiah Clarke, he was appointed joint organist with his mentor, Dr. Blow. In 1709 he was elected organist of Westminster Abbey. This amiable man and excellent musician died in 1727, in the fiftieth year of his age. A very large number of Dr. Croft's compositions remain still in manuscript. Cathedral chants of the XVI, XVII & XVIII centuries, ed. by Edward F. Rimbault, London: D. Almaine & Co., 1844

John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: Rev. John B. Dykes Topics: The Church and the Sacraments The Lord's Supper Composer of "ST. AGNES" in The Hymnal As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman
