Christian Hearts in Love United

Author: Nicolaus L. von Zinzendorf Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 17 hymnals Topics: Unity in Christ Lyrics: 1 Christian hearts in love united: search to know God's holy will. Let his love, in us ignited, more and more our spirits fill. Christ the head, and we his members— we reflect the light he is. Christ the master, we disciples– he is ours, and we are his. 2 Grant, Lord, that with your direction, "Love each other" we comply. Help us live in true affection, your love to exemplify. Let our mutual love be glowing brightly so that all may view that we, as on one stem growing, living branches are in you. 3 Come, then, living church of Jesus, covenant with him anew. Unto him who conquered for us may we pledge our service true. May our lives reflect the brightness of God's love in Jesus shown. To the world we then bear witness: we belong to God alone. Scripture: John 13:34 Used With Tune: O DU LIEBE MEINER LIEBE Text Sources: Tr. composite

Pablo D. Sosa

1933 - 2020 Person Name: Pablo Sosa Topics: Community in Christ; Ecumenical; Gathering; World Peace; Unity Author of "O Look and Wonder (¡Miren qué bueno!) (Psalm 133)" in Glory to God Pablo Sosa (b. 1933 - d. 2020) grew up and was educated in Argentina, the U.S. (Westminster Choir College), and Germany. For years he pastored a large Methodist congregation in Buenos Aires, Argentina while composing songs, leading choirs, editing hymnals, producing religious broadcasts, and teaching liturgy and hymnology at a seminary. Meanwhile, life in Argentina pushed him to question his assumptions about what’s best for congregational singing. During Argentina’s “dirty war,” two young women from his church were disappeared, possibly for working among the poor. As Catholic and Protestant churches hesitated whether to speak out, remain silent, or support the government, many people lost faith. Economic meltdown after the war plunged many middle-class Argentinians into poverty. Sosa’s growing social awareness widened his vision for “lifting up hope with a song.” He often describes worship as “the fiesta of the faithful,” where all are welcome and all music is seen as “part of the ‘song of the earth,’ which answers the psalmist’s call ‘Sing joyfully to God, all the earth!’ (Psalm 98:4).” Whether in his home church, Iglesia Evangélica Metodista La Tercera (Third Methodist Church) in Buenos Aires, or at churches or conferences around the world, he urges people, “Put your body into worship!” And he reminds them of the biblical connection between justice and worship. Daniel Iverson

1890 - 1977 Topics: Unity in Christ Author (st. 1) of "Spirit of the Living God" in Lift Up Your Hearts Daniel Iverson (b. Brunswick, GA, 1890; d. Asheville, NC, 1977) wrote the first stanza and tune of this hymn after hearing a sermon on the Holy Spirit during an evangelism crusade by the George Stephens Evangelistic Team in Orlando, Florida, 1926. The hymn was sung at the crusade and then printed in leaflets for use at other services. Published anonymously in Robert H. Coleman's Revival Songs (1929) with alterations in the tune, this short hymn gained much popularity by the middle of the century. Since the 1960s it has again been properly credited to Iverson. Iverson studied at the University of Georgia, Moody Bible Institute, Columbia Theological Seminary, and the University of South Carolina. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1914, he served congregations in Georgia and in North and South Carolina. In 1927 he founded the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church in Miami, Florida, and served there until his retirement in 1951. An evangelist as well as a preacher, Iverson planted seven new congregations during his ministry in Miami. --www.hymnary.org/hymn/PsH/424

Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.
