Palmer Wheeler

1905 - 1983 Composer of "[As I journey on to the gloryland]" in Gospel Gems In his mid-twenties, Palmer Esker Wheeler joined the first Stamps Quartet, singing for Victor Records. In his mid-thirties, he joined the Vaughan Quartet and sang in concerts and on the radio. He was known as "the golden tenor voice of gospel music." His songs were published by Stamps-Baxter and Vaughan Music. In his mid-thirties, he left quartet singing to teach at Freed-Hardeman College (Henderson, Tennessee). He led singing for many Churches of Christ congregations. He published Youth Melodies and Action Songs in 1952. His most popular songs included I Want To Go To Heaven When I Die, Have I Done The Best I Can, Tomorrow May Be Too Late, and We Will Never Be Sorry.
