I Have a Savior

Representative Text

1 I have a Savior who lightens my way,
I have a Savior who brightens the day,
I have a Savior who hears when I pray,—
‘Tis Jesus, the Light of the world.

Refrain:
He makes my way lighter,
He makes my day brighter,
He walks all life’s journey with me;
His presence and glory
Are round me and o’er me,
And lightens the pathway for me.

2 I have a Savior who always is true,
I have a Savior who always will do
All He has promised for me and for you,—
‘Tis Jesus, the Light of the world. [Refrain]

3 I have a Savior wherever I be,
I have a Savior on land or on sea,
Caring and watching in love over me,—
‘Tis Jesus, the Light of the world. [Refrain]

4 I have a Savior who’s reigning within,
Ready and anxious to help me to win
Victory over all evil and sin,—
‘Tis Jesus, the Light of the world. [Refrain]

Author: William C. Poole

William C. Poole was born and raised on a farm in Maryland. His parents belonged to the Methodist church. He graduated from Washington College and became a Methodist minister in Wilmington, Delaware area. He was pastor of McCabe Memorial, Richardson Park and other churches. In 1913 he was superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Delaware. He wrote about five hundred hymns. The writing was done as recreation and a diversion from his pastoral work. His goal in writing as well as in being a minister was to help people.
