Shepherds Keeping Watch By Night

Author: Anonymous Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 10 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Refrain First Line: Ring the merry songs today Lyrics: 1 Shepherds keeping watch by night, Saw around a glorious light; Heard an angel then proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" Refrain: Ring the merry songs today, Sweetly chime Messiah’s morn; Glad we hail this peaceful way, "Christ the Lord for man is born!" 2 Soon by many a heav’nly tongue Glory be to God was sung, Peace on earth, good will to men, Christ is born in Bethlehem. [Refrain] 3 Joyful tidings to mankind! Richest grace they now may find; Children, too, this grace may claim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. [Refrain] 4 Oh! how great His grace and love, Thus to leave His throne above; Thus to bear our guilt and shame, And be born in Bethlehem. [Refrain] 5 Lord! accept our warmest praise For this condescending grace, And our hearts with love inflame, For Thy birth in Bethlehem. [Refrain] Used With Tune: LOUVRE Text Sources: The New England Sabbath School Minstrel (Boston: New England Sabbath School Union, 1844)

'Round Our Sparkling Christmas Tree

Author: Anonymous Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 3 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 First Line: ’Round our sparkling Christmas tree Refrain First Line: Glory be to God on high Lyrics: 1 ’Round our sparkling Christmas tree, Let our gladsome voices ring; Children of the Lord are we, In His praise our hymn we sing. Refrain: Glory be to God on high, Peace on earth, good will to men; Let us join the angel band, Shout aloud the glad refrain. 2 Thanks to Him whose tender love In the wintry midnight wild, Sent the Savior from above, Gentle Jesus, holy Child. [Refrain] 3 Heav’n with joy and music rang, Silvery stars broke silence then; Angel voices greeting sang— Peace on earth, good will to men. [Refrain] 4 Now once more the night comes round, Now the hour once more draws near; When that anthem’s holy sound, Falls on fancy’s listening ear. [Refrain] 5 On our hearts, oh let it thrill, Jesus there be born again; And with peace our bosoms fill, Peace on earth, good will to men. [Refrain] Used With Tune: LOUVRE Text Sources: Hymnal for Primary Classes by Edwin W. Rice (Philadelphia: American Sunday School Union, 1896)

Authors, composers, editors, etc.

Anonymous

Author of "Shepherds Keeping Watch By Night" in The Cyber Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.
