Safely Through Another Week

Author: John Newton Hymnal: LH1941 #11 (1941) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Safely through another week God has brought us on our way; Let us now a blessing seek Waiting in His courts today: Day of all the week the best, Emblem of eternal rest! 2 Mercies multiplied each hour Thro' the week our praise demand; Guarded by almighty pow'r, Fed and guided by His hand, How ungrateful we have been In repaying love with sin! 3 While we pray for pard'ning grace, Thro' the dear Redeemer's Name, Show Thy reconciled face, Look not on our sin and shame. From our worldly cares set free, May we rest this day with Thee. 4 As we come Thy name to praise, May we feel Thy presence near; May Thy glory meet our eyes While we in Thy house appear! Here afford us, Lord, a taste Of our everlasting feast. 5 May Thy Gospel's joyful sound Conquer sinners, comfort saints; May the fruits of grace abound, Bring relief for all complaints. This may all our Sabbaths prove, Till we join the Church above. Amen. Topics: Adoration Lord's Day Scripture: Psalm 65:4 Tune Title: VOLLER WUNDER

Savior of the Nations, Come

Author: William M. Reynolds; St. Ambrose, d. 397; Martin Luther Hymnal: LH1941 #95 (1941) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Savior of the nations, come, Virgin's son, make here Thy home! Marvel now, O heav'n and earth, That the Lord chose such a birth. 2 Not by human flesh and blood By the Spirit of our God, Was the Word of God made flesh-- Woman's Offspring, pure and fresh. 3 Wondrous birth! O wondrous Child Of the Virgin undefiled! Tho' by all the world disowned, Still to be in heav'n enthroned. 4 From the Father forth He came And returneth to the same, Captive leading death and hell-- High the song of triumph swell! 5 Thou the Father's only Son, Hast o'er sin the victory won. Boundless shall Thy kingdom be; When shall we its glories see? 6 Brightly doth Thy manger shine, Glorious is its light divine. Let not sin o'ercloud this light; Ever be our faith thus bright. 7 Praise to God the Father sing, Praise to God the Son, our King, Praise to God the Spirit be Ever and eternally. Amen. Songs of Thankfulness and Praise

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Hymnal: LH1941 #134 (1941) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Lyrics: 1 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to Thee we raise, Manifested by the star To the sages from afar, Branch of royal David's stem, In Thy birth at Bethlehem. Anthems be to Thee addressed God in man made manifest. 2 Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme, And at Cana, Wedding-guest, In Thy Godhead manifest; Manifest in pow'r divine, Changing water into wine. Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 3 Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul; Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil's might; Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill. Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 4 Sun and moon shall darkened be, Stars shall fall, the heav'ns shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, All will the the trumpet hear, All will see the Judge appear; Thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest. 5 Grant us grace to see Thee, Lord, Mirrored in Thy holy Word; May we imitate Thee now And be pure as pure art Thou That we like to Thee may be At Thy great Epiphany And may praise Thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest. Amen. Topics: The Church Year Epiphany Scripture: 1 Peter 1:20 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. GEORGE

Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted

Author: Thomas Kelly Hymnal: LH1941 #153 (1941) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D First Line: Stricken, smitten and afflicted Lyrics: 1 Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, See Him dying on the tree! 'Tis the Christ by man rejected; Yes, my soul, 'tis He, 'tis He! 'Tis the long-expected Prophet, David's Son, yet David's Lord; Proofs I see sufficient of it: 'Tis the true and faithful Word. 2 Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning, Was there ever grief like His? Friends thro' fear His cause disowning, Foes insulting His distress; Many hands were raised to wound Him, None would interpose to save; But the deepest stroke that pierced Him Was the stroke that Justice gave. 3 Ye who think of sin but lightly Nor suppose the evil great Here may view its nature rightly, Here its guilt may estimate. Mark the Sacrifice appointed, See who bears the awful load; 'Tis the WORD, the LORD'S ANOINTED, Son of Man and Son of God. 4 Here we have a firm foundation; Here the refuge of the lost; Christ's the Rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast. Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, Sacrifice to cancel guilt! None shall ever be confounded Who on Him their hope have built. Amen. Sweet Flowerets of the Martyr Band

Author: Henry W. Baker; Aurelius C. Prudentius, d. 413 Hymnal: LH1941 #273 (1941) Meter: 8.8.8.8 First Line: Sweet flow'rets of the martyr band Lyrics: 1 Sweet flow'rets of the martyr band, Plucked by the tyrant's ruthless hand Upon the threshold of the morn, Like rosebuds by a tempest torn; 2 First victim for th'incarnate Lord, A tender flock to feel the sword; Beside the very altar, gay, With palm and crown, ye seemed to play. 3 Ah, what availed King Herod's wrath? He could not stop the Savior's path. Alone, while others murdered lay, In safety Christ is borne away. 4 O Lord, the Virgin-born, to Thee Eternal praise and glory be, Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Ghost forevermore. Amen. Speak, O Lord, Thy Servant Heareth

Author: George T. Rygh; Anna Sophia of Hesse-Darmstadt Hymnal: LH1941 #296 (1941) Lyrics: 1 Speak, O Lord, Thy servant heareth, To Thy Word I now give heed; Life and spirit Thy Word beareth, All Thy Word is true indeed. Death's dread power in me is rife; Jesus, may Thy Word of Life Fill my soul with love's strong fervor That I cling to Thee forever. 2 Oh, what blessing to be near Thee And to hearken to Thy voice! May I ever love and fear Thee That Thy Word may be my choice! Oft were hardened sinners, Lord, Struck with terror by Thy Word; But to him who for sin grieveth Comfort sweet and hope it giveth. 3 Lord, Thy words are waters living Where I quench my thirsty need; Lord, Thy words are bread life-giving, On Thy words my Soul doth feed. Lord, Thy words shall be my light Thro' death's vale and dreary night; Yea, they are my sword prevailing And my cup of joy unfailing. 4 Precious Jesus, I beseech Thee, May Thy words take root in me; May this gift from heav'n enrich me So that I bear fruit for Thee! Take them never from my heart Till I see Thee as Thou art, When in heav'nly bliss and glory I shall greet Thee and adore Thee. Amen. Soul, Adorn Thyself with Gladness

Author: Catherine Winkworth; Johann Franck Hymnal: LH1941 #305 (1941) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Soul, adorn thyself with gladness, Leave behind all gloom and sadness; Come into the day-light's splendor, There with joy thy praises render Unto Him whose grace unbounded Hath this wondrous Supper founded. High o'er all the heav'ns He reigneth, Yet to dwell with thee He deigneth. 2 Hasten as a bride to meet Him And with loving rev'rence greet Him, For with words of life immortal Now He knocketh at thy portal. Haste to ope the gates before Him, Saying, while thou dost adore Him: Suffer, Lord, that I receive Thee, And I nevermore will leave Thee. 3 He who craves a precious treasure Neither cost nor pain will measure; But the priceless gifts of heaven God to us hath freely given. Tho' the wealth of earth were proffered, Naught would buy the gifts here offered: Christ's true body, for thee riven, And His blood, for thee once given. 4 Ah, how hungers all my spirit For the love I do not merit! Oft have I, with sighs fast thronging, Thought upon this food with longing, In the battle well-nigh worsted, For this cup of life have thirsted, For the Friend who here invites us And to God Himself unites us. 5 In my heart I find ascending Holy awe, with rapture blending, As this mystery I ponder, Filling all my soul with wonder, Bearing witness at this hour Of the greatness of God's power; Far beyond all human telling Is the pow'r within Him dwelling. 6 Human reason, though it ponder, Cannot fathom this great wonder That Christ's body e'er remaineth Though it countless souls sustaineth And that He His blood is giving With the wine we are receiving. These great mysteries unsounded Are by God alone expounded. 7 Jesus, Sun of Life, my Splendor, Jesus, Thou my Friend most tender, Jesus, Joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring-- At Thy feet I cry, my Maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessed food from heaven, For our good, Thy glory, given. 8 Lord, by love and mercy driven Thou hast left Thy throne in heaven On the cross for me to languish And to die in bitter anguish, To forego all joy and gladness And to shed Thy blood in sadness. By this blood, redeemed and living, Lord, I praise Thee with thanksgiving. 9 Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray Thee, Let me gladly here obey Thee. By Thy love I am invited, Be Thy love with love requited; From this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love's treasure. Through the gifts Thou here dost give me As Thy guest in heav'n receive me. Amen. Topics: The Sacraments The Lord's Supper Scripture: Revelation 19:8 Languages: English Tune Title: SCHMÜCKE DICH

Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Hymnal: LH1941 #377 (1941) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Scripture: Romans 3 Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL

Savior, I Follow On

Author: Charles S. Robinson Hymnal: LH1941 #422 (1941) Meter: 6.4.6.4.6.6.6.4 Lyrics: 1 Savior, I follow on, Guided by Thee, Seeing not yet the hand That leadeth me. Hushed be my heart and still, Fear I no further ill, Only to meet Thy will My will shall be. 2 Riven the rock for me Thirst to relieve, Manna from heaven falls Fresh ev'ry eve; Never a want severe Causeth my eye a tear But Thou dost whisper near, "Only believe." 3 Often to Marah’s brink Have I been brought; Shrinking the cup to drink, Help I have sought; And with the prayer’s ascent Jesus the branch hath rent, Quickly relief hath sent, Sweet'ning the draught. 4 Savior, I long to walk Closer with Thee; Led by Thy guiding hand Ever to be Constantly near Thy side, Quickened and purified, Living for Him who died Freely for me. Amen. Topics: Sanctification (The Christian Life) New Obedience Scripture: Exodus 15:23 Languages: English Tune Title: WINTERTON
