1817 - 1888 Person Name: James Gridley Small Author of "I've found a Friend, oh, such a Friend!" in Church Hymnal Small, James Grindly, son of George Small, J.P. of Edinburgh, was born in that city in 1817. He was educated at the High School, and the University of Edinburgh. He studied divinity under Dr. Chalmers, and in 1843 he joined the Free Church of Scotland. In 1847 he became the minister of the Free Church at Bervie, near Montrose. He died at Renfrew, Feb. 11, 1888. His poetical works were (1l) The Highlands and other Poems, 1843, 3rd ed. 1852; (2) Songs of the Vineyard in Days of Gloom and Sadness, 1846 ; (3) Hymns for Youthful Voices, 1859; (4) Psalms and Sacred Songs, 1866. His well-known hymn "I've found a Friend; oh such a Friend" (Jesus, the Friend), appeared in his Psalms & Sacred Songs, 1866. It is found in I. D. b. 1948 Arranger of "SMALLWOOD" in The New Century Hymnal Richard Smallwood (b. Washington, D.C., 1948), a composer, arranger, pianist, and innovator in the African American gospel style. Many of his arrangements of gospel hymns appear in Lift Every Voice and Sing (1981). Organized by Smallwood in 1967, the Richard Smallwood Singers have sung and recorded many of his arrangements. 1722 - 1771 Person Name: Christopher Smart, 1722-1771 Author of "Awake, arise, lift up your voice" in The Hymnal 1982 Smart, Christophe, M.A., was born at Shipburn, Kent, in 1722, and educated at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, where he gained the Seatonian prize for five years, four of which were in succession, (B.A. 1747.) He removed to London in 1753, and gave some attention to literature: but neglecting both his property and his constitution, he became poor and insane. He died in the King's Bench, 1771. His Poems were published in 2 vols. in 1771. From that work "Father of light conduct my feet" (Divine Guidance), and "I sing of God the mighty Source" [God the Author of All), have been taken. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
