The God of Abraham Praise

Author: Thomas Olivers (1725-1799); Daniel ben Judah Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #347 (1998) Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of everlasting days, and God of love; Jehovah, great I AM! by earth and heaven confessed: I bow and bless the sacred Name forever blest. 2 The great I AM has sworn; I on this oath depend. I shall, on eagles' wings upborne, to heaven ascend. I shall behold God's face; I shall God's power adore, and sing the wonders of God's grace forevermore. 3 The goodly land I see with peace and plenty blest; a land of sacred liberty, and endless rest. There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow with mercy crowned. 4 Triumphant hosts on high give thanks eternally and "Holy, holy, holy” cry, "great Trinity!" Hail Abraham’s God and ours! One mighty hymn we raise: all power and majesty be yours and endless praise! Begin, my tongue, some heavenly theme

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Hymnal: Together in Song #116 (1999) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 Begin, my tongue, some heavenly theme and speak some boundless thing, the mighty works or mightier name, of our eternal king. 2 Tell of his wondrous faithfulness, and sound his power abroad; sing the sweet promise of his grace and our fulfilling God. 3 His very word of grace is strong as that which built the skies; the voice that rolls the stars along speaks all the promises. 4 He said, "Let wide the heaven be spread,' and heaven was stretched abroad; 'Abram, I'll be your God,' he said and he was Abram's God. 5 O might I hear your heavenly tongue but whisper, 'You are mine'; those gentle words should raise my song to notes almost divine. 6 How would my leaping heart rejoice, and think my heaven secure! I trust the all-creating voice, and faith desires no more. I hear the real though far-off hymn That hails a new creation. Refrain: No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing? 2 Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing; It sounds and echoes in my soul; How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] 3 What though the tempest 'round me roar, I hear the truth it liveth. What though the darkness 'round me close, Songs in the night it giveth. [Refrain] 4 When tyrants tremble, sick with fear, And hear their death knells ringing; When friends rejoice both far and near, How can I keep from singing? O love how deep, how broad, how high!

Author: Benjamin Webb, 1819-85; Thomas à Kempis, 1379-1471 Hymnal: Together in Song #194 (1999) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 O love how deep, how broad, how high! it fills the heart with ecstasy that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals’ sake. 2 He sent no angel to our race of higher or of lower place but wore the robe of human frame himself, and to this lost world came. 3 For us he was baptized, and bore his holy fast, and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew; for us the tempter overthrew. 4 For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought, by words and signs and actions, thus still seeking not himself but us. 5 For us to wicked hands betrayed, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us at length gave up his breath. 6 For us he rose from death again, for us he went on high to reign, for us he sent his Spirit here to guide, to strengthen and to cheer. 7 To him whose boundless love has won salvation for us through his Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity. God's holy law, transgressed

Author: Beddome Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #814 (1873) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Scripture: Romans 4:15 Lyrics: 1 God's holy law, transgressed, Speaks nothing but despair; Burdened with guilt, with grief oppressed, We find no comfort there. 2 Not all our groans and tears, Nor works which we have done, Nor vows, nor promises, nor prayers, Can e'er for sin atone. 3 Relief alone is found In Jesus' precious blood: 'Tis this that heals the mortal wound, And reconciles to God. 4 High lifted on the cross, The spotless victim dies: This is salvation's only source, Hence all our hopes arise. Salvation now to us has come

Author: Paul Speratus, 1484-1551; Carl Döving, 1867-1936 Hymnal: Together in Song #195 (1999) Meter: 8.7.87.8.8.7 Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 Salvation now to us has come by God’s free grace and favour; good works cannot avert our doom, they help and save us never. In faith we look to Christ alone, who did for all the world atone; he is our one redeemer. 2 The law of God fulfilled must be, or we were lost for ever; therefore God sent his Son that he might us from death deliver. For us the law he has fulfilled, the Father's anger he has stilled; God's curse is gone for ever. 3 Since Christ has full atonement made and brought us to salvation, each Christian therefore may be glad, and build on this foundation: your grace alone, dear Lord, we plead, your death is now our life indeed, for you have paid our ransom. 4 To you, O Lord, in faith we cling, we love and trust you truly, and from this faith good works will spring that serve our neighbour duly. It's faith alone that justified; the works that from such faith arise reveal that it is living. 5 All blessing, honour, thanks and praise to Father, Son, and Spirit, to God who saved us by his grace; all glory to his merit! O Triune God, in heaven above, you have revealed your saving love; your blessèd name we hallow. Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #377 (1941) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Scripture: Romans 4 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL
