He was a contributor to the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, and directed digs for the Palestine Excavation Fund (1900-09, 1923-24). He also played the organ and directed the choir at the Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church in Dublin, and served on the committee that revised Scotland’s The Church Hymnody.
