Lord of the Church, we pray for our renewing

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #497 (2013) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 Lord of the Church, we pray for our renewing: Christ over all, our undivided aim. Fire of the Spirit, burn for our enduing, wind of the Spirit, fan the living flame! We turn to Christ amid our fear and failing, the will that lacks the courage to be free, the weary labours, all but unavailing, to bring us nearer what a church should be. 2 Lord of the Church, we seek a Father's blessing, a true repentance and a faith restored, a swift obedience and a new possessing, filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord! We turn to Christ from all our restless striving, unnumbered voices with a single prayer: the living water for our souls' reviving, in Christ to live, and love and serve and care. 3 Lord of the Church, we long for our uniting, true to one calling, by one vision stirred; one cross proclaiming and one creed reciting, one in the truth of Jesus and his word. So lead us on; till toil and trouble ended, one Church triumphant one new song shall sing, to praise his glory, risen and ascended, Christ over all, the everlasting King! I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton (1857-1932) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #666 (2013) Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' O Christ the same, through all our story's pages

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #741 (2013) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 O Christ the same, through all our story's pages, our loves and hopes, our failures and our fears; eternal Lord, the King of all the ages, unchanging still, amid the passing years: O living Word, the source of all creation, who spread the skies, and set the stars ablaze, O Christ the same, who wrought our whole salvation, we bring our thanks for all our yesterdays. 2 O Christ the same, the friend of sinners sharing our inmost thoughts, the secrets none can hide, still as of old upon Your body bearing the marks of love, in triumph glorified: O Son of Man, who stooped for us from heaven, O Prince of Life, in all Your saving power, O Christ the same, to whom our hearts are given, we bring our thanks for this the present hour. 3 O Christ the same, secure within whose keeping our lives and loves, our days and years remain, our work and rest, our waking and our sleeping, our calm and storm, our pleasure and our pain: O Lord of love, for all our joys and sorrows, for all our hopes, when earth shall fade and flee, O Christ the same, beyond our brief tomorrows, we bring our thanks for all that is to be. If we could speak all tongues of earth and heaven

Author: Rob Atkins Hymnal: Hymnary Custom Collection #1 Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 If we could speak all tongues of earth and heavn but have not love our prophecy is vain; though every mystery to us is open to talk of love will be an empty claim. But love is swift to clear misunderstanding, love is not proud, insisting on display and love is rich in patient understanding: grant us, oh Lord of love to seek the better way. 2 If we should give to others when we prosper but have not love, we fail the final test: if we should place our substance on the altar, our sacrifice, if boastful, is not blessed. For love is clean and clear in its intentions, lifts up its face to face the light of day, love is pure harmony without pretension: grant us, oh Lord of love to find the better way. 3 If by our faith we make the mountains tremble but have not love, then nothing do we win: we are but noisy gongs or clanging cymbals condemned to sink to silence in the end. But love is always faithful in rejoicing, lifts up a song of hope that never fails love is a choir of perfect blended voices: grant us, oh Lord of love to choose the better way. 4 When we were young we fought for worldly glory, but worldly ways in time all have to die. We see in part as in a mirror darkly and wait in hope for love’s bright sun to rise. Faith, hope and love, these three remain our story but faith and hope will vanish in the day; as we await love’s triumph in the glory grant us, oh Lord of love to love the better way. I Cannot Tell

Author: William Y. Fullerton Hymnal: The Worshiping Church #109 (1990) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: I cannot tell why he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should come in flesh as prophets long foretold, or why the Shepherd longs to save the wanderers and bring them back rejoicing to the fold. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and labored, and so the promised Savior of the world is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the suffering Savior of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendor, when he, the risen Savior of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. Above the Hills of Time

Author: Thomas Tiplady Hymnal: The A.M.E. Zion Hymnal #173 (1999) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming Lyrics: 1 Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming, Fair as the sun when night has turned to day; And from it love’s pure light is richly streaming, To cleanse the heart and banish sin away. To this dear cross the eyes of men are turning Today as in the ages lost to sight; And so for Thee, O Christ, men’s hearts are yearning, As shipwrecked seamen yearn for morning light. 2 The cross, O Christ, Thy wondrous love revealing, Awakes our hearts as with the light of morn, And pardon o’er our sinful spirits stealing Tells us that we, in Thee, have been reborn. Like echoes to sweet temple bells replying Our hearts, O Lord, make answer to Thy love; And we will love Thee with a love undying, Till we are gathered to Thy home above. AMEN. Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, 1926- Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #327 (2010) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing: Christ over all, our undivided aim. Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (born 1926) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #499 (1987) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing: Christ over all, our undivided aim. Fire of the Spirit, burn for our enduring, wind of the Spirit, fan the living flame! We turn to Christ from all our restless striving, unnumbered voices with a single prayer — the living water for our souls' reviving, in Christ to live, and love and serve and care. 3 Lord of the church, we long for our uniting, true to one calling, by one vision stirred; one cross proclaiming and one creed reciting, one in the truth of Jesus and his word! So lead us on; till toil and trouble ended, one church triumphant one new song shall sing, to praise his glory, risen and ascended, Christ over all, the everlasting king! Topics: God's Church Unity and Growth; Pentecost The Holy Spirit; Trinity Sunday The Trinity; Pentecost 2 The People of God; Pentecost 2 The Church's Unity and Fellowship Languages: English Tune Title: LONDONDERRY AIR

We Shall Go Out with Hope of Resurrection

Author: June Boyce-Tillman Hymnal: Voices United #586 (1996) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 We shall go out with hope of resurrection; we shall go out, from strength to strength go on; we shall go out and tell our stories boldly; tales of a love that will not let us go. We'll sing our songs of wrongs that can be righted; we'll dream our dream of hurts that can be healed; we'll weave a cloth of all the world united within the vision of new life who sets us free. 2 We'll give a voice to those who have not spoken; we'll find the words for those whose lips are sealed; we'll make the tunes for those who sing no longer, expressive love alive in every heart. We'll share our joy with those who are still weeping, raise hymns of strength for hearts that break in grief, we'll leap and dance the resurrection story including all in circles of our love. Topics: Church in the World Discipleship: Witness; Courage; Witness; Lent 2 Year C Tune Title: LONDONDERRY AIR
