Heavenly Canaan

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Bright Array #30 (1889) Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:1 First Line: There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign Lyrics: 1 There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign, Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain. There everlasting spring abides, And never withering flowers: Death, like a narrow sea, divides This heav'nly land from ours. 2 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood Stand dressed in living green: So to the Jews old Canaan stood, While Jordan rolled between. But timorous mortals start and shrink To cross this narrow sea, And linger, trembling, on the brink, And fear to launch away. 3 O, would we make our doubts remove,— Those gloomy doubts that rise,— And see the Canaan that we love, With unbeclouded eyes,— Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er, Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, Should fright us from the shore. On Jordan's Stromy Banks

Author: Samuel Stennett Hymnal: The Christian Sunday School Hymnal #25 (1883) Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:1 First Line: On Jordan's stormy banks I stand Refrain First Line: We will rest in the fair and happy land Lyrics: 1 On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, And cast a wishful eye To Canaan's fair and happy land, Where my possessions lie. Refrain: We will rest in the fair and happy land, Just across on the evergreen shore, Sing the song of Moses and the Lamb, And dwell with Jesus evermore. 2 O'er all those wide-extended plains Shines one eternal day; There God, the Sun, forever reigns, And scatters night away. [Refrain] 3 When shall I reach that happy place, And be forever blest? When shall I see my Father's face, And in his bosom rest? [Refrain] 4 Filled with delight, my raptured soul Would here no longer stay; Though Jordan's waves around me roll, Fearless I'd launch away. [Refrain] Tune Title: [On Jordan's stormy banks I stand]

The Lord, the great I AM, by earth and heaven confessed, we bow before your holy name, forever blest. 2 Your spirit still flows free, high surging where it will. In prophet's word you spoke of old and you speak still. Established is your law, and changeless it shall stand, deep writ upon the human heart by your strong hand. 3 Your goodly land we seek, with peace and plenty blest, a land of sacred liberty and Sabbath rest. There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow with mercy crowned. 4 You have eternal life implanted in the soul; your love shall be our strength and stay, while ages roll. Oh, glorious hope of perfect love

Author: C. Wesley Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #468 (1873) Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:1 Lyrics: 1 Oh, glorious hope of perfect love, It lifts me up to things above; It bears on eagles' wings; It gives my ravished soul a taste, And makes me for some moments feast With Jesus' priests and kings. 2 Rejoicing now in earnest hope, I stand, and from the mountain-top See all the land below: Rivers of milk and honey rise, And all the fruits of Paradise In endless plenty grow. 3 A land of corn, and wine, and oil, Favor'd with God's peculiar smile, With every blessing blest; There dwells the Lord our Righteousness, And keeps his own in perfect peace, And everlasting rest. 4 Oh, that I might at once go up; No more on this side Jordan stop, But now the land possess; This moment end my legal years; Sorrows and sins, and doubts and fears, A howling wilderness. The presence of God worth dying for; or the Death of Moses

Author: Dr. Watts Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #DLV (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:5 First Line: Lord, 'tis an infinite delight Lyrics: 1 Lord, 'tis an infinite delight To see thy lovely face, To dwell whole ages in thy sight, And feel thy vital rays. 2 This Gabriel knows; and sings thy name With raptures on his tongue; Moses the saint enjoys the same, And heaven repeats the song. 3 While the bright nation sounds thy praise From each eternal hill, Sweet odours of exhaling grace The happy region fill. 4 Thy love, a sea without a shore, Spreads life and joy abroad; O 'tis a heaven worth dying for, To see a smiling God. 5 Sweet was the journey to the sky And wondrous prophet try'd; "Climb up the mount," says God, "and die," The prophet climb'd and died. 6 Softly his fainting head he lay Upon his maker's breast; His maker kiss'd his soul away, And laid his flesh to rest. 7 Shew me thy face, and I'll away From all inferior things; Speak, Lord, and here I quit my clay, And stretch my airy wings. Christ's admonition to Peter under approaching trials, and intercession for him

Author: Dr. Doddridge Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CLV (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:5 First Line: How keen the tempter's malice is! Lyrics: 1 How keen the tempter's malice is! How artful, and how great! Tho' not one grain shall be destroyed, Yet will he sift the wheat. 2 But God can all his power control, And gather in his chain; And, where he seems to triumph most, The captive soul regain. 3 There is a shepherd kind and strong, Still watchful for his sheep; Nor shall the infernal lion rend, Whom he vouchsafes to keep. 4 Blest Jesus, intercede for us, That we may fall not more, O raise us when we prostrate lie, And comfort lost restore, 5 The secret energy impart, That faith may never fail; But, 'midst whole showers of fiery darts, That temper'd shield prevail. 6 Secur'd ourselves by grace divine, We'll guard our brethren too; And, taught their frailty by our own, Our care of them renew.
