God moves in a mysterious way

Author: Cowper Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #131 (1873) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Genesis 45:5-7 Lyrics: 1 God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants his footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm. 2 Deep in unfathomable mines Of never-failing skill, He treasures up his bright designs, And works his sovereign will. 3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break In blessings on your head. 4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust him for his grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face. 5 His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding every hour; The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flower. 6 Blind unbelief is sure to err, And scan his work in vain: God is his own interpreter, And he will make it plain. Joseph made known to his brethren

Author: Newton Hymnal: A Selection of Psalms and Hymns #CCCXXIV (1790) Scripture: Genesis 45:3-4 First Line: When Joseph his brethren beheld Lyrics: 1 When Joseph his brethren beheld, Afflicted and trembling with fear His heart with compassion was fill'd, From weeping he could not forbear: A while his behaviour was rough; to bring their past sins to their minds; But when they were humbled enough, He hasted to shew himself kind. 2 How little they thought it was he, Whom they had ill-treated and sold! How great their confusion must be, As soon as his name he had told! "I am Joseph your brother, he said, And still to my heart you are dear, You sold me, and thought i was dead, But God for your sakes sent me here." 3 Tho' greatly distressed before, When charg'd with purloining the cup They now were confounded much more, Not one of them durst to look up. "Can Joseph, whom we would have slain Forgive us the evil we did? And will he our housholds maintain! O this is a brother indeed"! 4 Thus dragg'd by my conscience I came, And laden with guilt, to the Lord: Surrounded with terror and shame, Unable to utter a word. At first he look'd stern and severe, What anguish then pierced my heart Expecting each moment to hear, The sentence, "Thou cursed depart." 5 But oh! what surprise when he spoke, While tenderness beam'd in his face: My heart then to pieces was broke O'erwhelm'd and counfounded by grace Poor sinner I know thee full well, By thee I was sold and was slain; But I dy'd to redeem thee from hell, And raise thee in glory to reign. 6 I am Jesus whom thou hast blasphem'd, And crucify'd often afresh; But let me henceforth be esteem'd Thy brother, thy bone, and thy flesh My pardon I freely bestow, Thy wants I will fully supply; I'll guide thee and guard thee below, And soon will remove thee on high. 7 Go, publish to sinners around, That they may be willing to come, The mercy which now you have found And tell them that yet there is room. Oh, sinners, the message obey! No more vain excuses pretend; But come without further delay, To JESUS, our brother, and friend. Languages: English

God, Give Me Time

Author: Shirley Erena Murray Hymnal: Voices Together #144 (2020) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Genesis 45:1-15 First Line: God, give me time to learn the words Lyrics: 1 God, give me time to learn the words I find so hard to say: the loving words, forgiving words that take the sting away. God, give me calm to ride the storm when waves of anger rise, a moment when I grasp a truth my lesser self denies. 2 God, give me time to deal with words that threaten and destroy: the easy words of politics that kill creation’s joy; the speeches that proliferate economies of greed; the thieves of children’s heritage, the poison in the seed. 3 God, give me time to meet your Word, transforming as I go my little world, my larger world, by all I do and know; encountering in others’ faith the wisdom and the grace that Jesus Christ was born to bring, and gave a human face.
