Author: George Croly, 1780-1860 Hymnal: African American Heritage Hymnal #312 (2001) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Scripture: Psalm 41:11 Lyrics: 1 Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move; Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, And make me love Thee as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, No sudden rending of the veil of clay, No angel visitant, no op'ning skies; But take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh; Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. 4 Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love, One holy passion filling all my frame; The kindling of the heav'n-descended Dove, My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame. I need the love of Jesus To cheer me on my way, To guide my doubting footsteps, To be my strength and stay. 3 I need thee, precious Jesus, And hope to see thee soon, Encircled with the rainbow And seated on thy throne. God's hidden ones

Author: William Crosswell Hymnal: Laudes Domini #472 (1888) Scripture: Psalm 41:1 First Line: Lord, lead the way the Saviour went Lyrics: 1 Lord, lead the way the Saviour went, By lane and cell obscure, And let love's treasures still be spent, Like his, upon the poor. 2 Like him, through scenes of deep distress Who bore the world's sad weight, We, in their crowded loneliness, Would seek the desolate. 3 For thou hast placed us side by side In this wide world of ill; And that thy followers may be tried, The poor are with us still. 4 Mean are all offerings we can make; Yet thou hast taught us, Lord, If given for the Saviour's sake, They lose not their reward. Your Hands, O Lord, in Days of Old

Author: Edward Hayes Plumptre (1821-1891) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #293 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Psalm 41 Lyrics: 1 Your hands, O Lord, in days of old were strong to heal and save; they triumphed over pain and death, o'er darkness and the grave. To you they went, the blind, the mute, the palsied and the lame, the leper set apart and shunned, the sick with fevered frame. 2 And then your touch brought life and health, gave speech and strength and sight; and youth renewed, with health restored, claimed you, the Lord of light. And so, O Lord, be near to bless, almighty now as then, in every street, in every home, in every troubled friend. 3 O be our mighty healer still, O Lord of life and death; restore and strengthen, soothe and bless with your almighty breath. On hands that work and eyes that see, your healing wisdom pour, that whole and sick and weak and strong may praise you evermore. Topics: Healing; Epiphany (season) Languages: English Tune Title: ST. O Christ, the Healer

Author: Fred Pratt Green (1903-) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #291 (1998) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 41 First Line: O Christ, the healer, we have come Lyrics: 1 O Christ, the healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends. How can we fail to be restored, when reached by love that never ends? 2 From every ailment flesh endures our bodies clamour to be freed; yet in our hearts we would confess that wholeness is our deepest need. 3 How strong, O Lord, are our desires, how weak our knowledge of ourselves! Release in us those healing truths unconscious pride resists or shelves. 4 In conflicts that destroy our health we diagnose the world's disease; our common life declares our ills: is there no cure, O Christ, for these? 5 Grant that we all, made one in faith, in your community may find the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach the whole of humankind. Happy the Man, whose tender Care

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #XLI (1760) Scripture: Psalm 41 Lyrics: 1 Happy the Man, whose tender Care relieves the Poor distress'd! When he's by Troubles compass'd round, the Lord shall give him Rest. 2 The Lord his Life, with Blessings crown'd, in Safety shall prolong; And disappoint the Will of those that seek to do him Wrong. 3 If he in languishing Estate, oppress'd with Sickness, lie; The Lord will easy make his Bed, and inward Strength supply. 4 Secure of this, to Thee, my God, I thus my Pray'r address'd: "Lord, for thy Mercy, heal my Soul, "tho' I have much trasgress'd." 5 My cruel Foes, with sland'rous Words, attempt to wound my Fame: "When shall he die (say they,) and Men "forget his very Name?" 6 Suppose they formal Visits make, 'tis all but empty Show: They gather Mischief in their Hearts, and vent it where they go. 7,8 With private Whispers, such as these, to hurt me they devise: "A sore Disease afflicts him now; "he's fall'n, no more to rise." 9 My own familiar Bosom-friend, on whom I most rely'd, Has me, whose daily Guest he was, with open Scorn defy'd. 10 But thou my sad and wretched State, in Mercy, Lord, regard; And raise me up, that all their Crimes may meet their just Reward. 11 By this I know, thy gracious Ear is open when I call; Because Thou suffer'st not my Foes to triumph in my Fall. 12 Thy tender Care secures my Life from Danger and Disgrace; And Thou vouchsaf'st to set me still before thy glorious Face. 13 Let therefore Israel's Lord and God from Ages to Age be blest; And all the People's glad Applause with loud Amens express'd. Lord, let my prayer like incense rise

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #77 (1854) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 41 Lyrics: Lord, let my prayer like incense rise, And when I lift my hands to Thee, As on the evening sacrifice Look down from heaven well-pleased on me. Set Thou a watch to keep my tongue, Let not my heart to sin incline; Save me from men who practise wrong, Let me not share their mirth and wine. But let the righteous, when I stray, Smite me in love,--his strokes are kind; His mild reproofs, like oil, allay The wounds they make, and heal the mind. Mine eyes are unto Thee, my God! Behold me humbled in the dust; I kiss the hand that wields the rod, I own thy chastisements are just. But O! redeem me from the snares With which the world surrounds my feet, Its riches, vanities, and cares, Its love, its hatred, its deceit. The Lord will keep him, guard his life, on earth he shall be blest; the Lord will not surrender him by foes to be distressed. 2 Upon the bed of suffering Jehovah will sustain, and in his sickness God will soothe the weariness and pain. O LORD, to Thee my cry ascends, let me Thy mercy see; heal Thou my soul, for I have sinned, I have offended Thee. 3 My enemies against me speak, and they my life have scorned; they wish my name to pass away, unhonored and unmourned. My foe, deceitful, visits me, by seeming kindness led, his heart intent on gathering some hurtful news to spread. 4 My foes, together whispering, their evil plans devise; disease, they say, cleaves fast to him, laid low, he shall not rise. Yea, he who was my chosen friend, in whom I put my trust, who ate my bread, now turns in wrath to crush me in the dust. 5 Do Thou, Jehovah, show me grace, and raise me up again, that I with justice may requite these base and wicked men. By this I know assuredly that I am loved by Thee, because my foe does not exult in triumph over me. 6 And as for me, in uprightness Thou dost uphold me well, and settest me before Thy face forevermore to dwell. Blest be Jehovah, Israel’s God forevermore. Amen. Let age to age eternally repeat His praise. Amen. Topics: Confession and Propitiation Languages: English Tune Title: HIGH OVER ALL
