A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; Frederick H. Hedge, 1805-1890 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #507 (2003) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Scripture: Psalm 45 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours thro' him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever. Walworth, 1820-1900; Ignaz Franz, 1719-1790 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #138 (2003) Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Scripture: Psalm 45:17 Lyrics: 1 Holy God, we praise your name, Lord of all, we bow before you; all on earth your scepter claim, all in heaven above adore you; infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign. 2 Hark! the glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heavens with sweet accord: holy, holy, holy Lord. 3 All apostles join the strain as your sacred Name they hallow; prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white robed martyrs follow; and from morn to set of sun, through the Church the song goes on. 4 Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, Three we name you; while in essence only one, undivided God we claim you, then, adoring, bend the knee, while we own the mystery. Not to condemn the sons of men

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #283 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 45 Lyrics: Not to condemn the sons of men, Did Christ, the Son of God, appear; No weapons in his hands are seen, No flaming sword nor thunder there. Such was the pity of our God, He loved the race of man so well, He sent his Son to bear our load Of sins, and save our souls from hell. Sinners, believe the Savior's word, Trust in his mighty name and live; A thousand joys his lips afford, His hands a thousand blessings give. But vengeance and damnation lies On rebels who refuse the grace; Who God's eternal Son despise, The hottest hell shall be their place.
