Afar in Old Judea

Author: Roy A. Cheville, 1897-1986 Hymnal: Community of Christ Sings #63 (2013) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Confirmation Lyrics: 1 Afar in old Judea, above the Jordan stream, a heav'nly light descended on a baptismal scene. Then came the confirmation of Jesus, from above, the sacramental signet; the Spirit as a dove. 2 In ancient Zarahemla, above the temple towers, appeared the Christ of Judah to crown the watchful hours. A voice, serene yet piercing beyond our words to tell, proclaimed him as the Savior whom prophets did foretell. 3 Then in a time of searching, a youth who sought God's way saw in Palmyra's woodland a light beyond his day, and when the vision opened to him whose sight was dim, he heard the Father saying, "This is my Son, hear him!" 4 Today the heav'ns are open to souls prepared to hear the wondrous revelation of Christ, who's ever near. The Savior of the ages still lives with us today; he seeks to help us know him and leads us in his way. Scripture: Matthew 3:16-17 Languages: English Tune Title: EWING

All Hail, Thou Day Of Wondrous Grace

Author: H. Brueckner Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #544 (1930) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Confirmation Lyrics: 1 All hail, thou day of wondrous grace, My confirmation day, When I the steps of God retrace, Imprinted on my way. 2 When I was but an infant small, He pledged His love to me; He called me with a holy call His child and heir to be. 3 The sacred washing I received, That cleansed me well from sin; Of ev'ry guilty stain relieved, I now have peace within. 4 From parents kind and teachers true, By Thee, my God, ordained, I learned Thy holy will to do, By faith in Christ sustained. 5 So now I come before Thy throne, Thy precious name to bless, Resolved to serve Thee as Thine own In truth and holiness. 6 I consecrate myself to Thee In body, soul and mind; Do Thou but help and strengthen me, Thou Hope of all mankind. 7 While in this world of sin and strife, Vouchsafe to me Thy grace Till I have reached the end of life And see Thee face to face. How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see. 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. 3 Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come. 'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. 4 The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. 5 When we've been there a thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun. At the Name of Jesus

Author: Caroline Maria Noel Hymnal: The Worshipbook #303 (1972) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Topics: Acts of the Church Confirmation Lyrics: 1 At the name of Jesus Every knee shall bow, Every tongue confess him King of Glory now: 'Tis the Father's pleasure We should call him Lord, Who from the beginning Was the mighty Word. 2 Humbled for a season, To receive a name From the lips of sinners, Unto whom He came, Faithfully He bore it Spotless to the last, Brought it back victorious, When from death He passed; 3 Bore it up triumphant, With its human light, Through all ranks of creatures, To the central height, To the throne of Godhead, To the Father's breast; Filled it with the glory Of that perfect rest. 4 Brothers, this Lord Jesus Shall return again, With His Father's glory O'er the earth to reign; For all wreaths of empire Meet upon his brow, And our hearts confess him King of glory now. A Call to the Young

Hymnal: A Collection of Hymns and Prayers, for Public and Private Worship #345 (1845) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Church Confirmation First Line: Now, in the heat of youthful blood Lyrics: 1 Now, in the heat of youthful blood, Remember your Creator, God; Behold, the months come hast'ning on, When you shall say, "my joys are gone." 2 God from on high beholds your thoughts; His book records your secret faults: The works of darkness men have done Must all appear before the sun. 3 Behold the aged sinner goes, Laden with guilt and heavy woes, Down to the regions of the dead, With bitt'rest curses on his head. 4 The dust returns to dust again; The soul, in agonies of pain, Ascends to God, not there to dwell, But hears her doom, and sinks to hell. 5 God of the young! turn off their eyes, From earth's alluring vanities; And let the warnings of thy word Awake their souls to fear the Lord! A new heart, Lord, create in me

All my hope on God is founded

Author: Robert Bridges, 1844-1930; Joachim Neander Hymnal: Together in Song #560b (1999) Meter: 8.7.8.7.3.3.7 Topics: Confirmation Service Lyrics: 1 All my hope on God is founded; all my trust he will renew, through all change and chance he guides me, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. 2 Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray our trust; all we build with care and labour, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 God's great goodness lasts for ever, deep his wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. 4 Daily the almighty giver will his bounteous gifts bestow; in his will our souls find pleasure, leading us where'er we go. Love will stand at his hand, joy shall wait for his command. 5 Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Hear Christ call one and all: those who follow shall not fall. Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Tune Title: MEINE HOFFNUNG
