With joy we meditate the grace

Author: William Jones, 1726-1800 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #565 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 With joy we meditate the grace of our High Priest above; his heart is made of tenderness, and ever yearns with love. 2 Touched with a sympathy within, he knows our feeble frame; he knows what sore temptations mean for he has felt the same. 3 He in the days of feeble flesh poured out his cries and tears; and, in his measure, feels afresh what every member bears. 4 He'll never quench the smoking flax, but raise it to a flame; the bruisèd reed he never breaks, nor scorns the meanest name. 5 Then let our humble faith address his mercy and his power: we shall obtain delivering grace in every needful hour. The King shall come when morning dawns

Author: John Brownlie, 1859-1925 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #54 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 The King shall come when morning dawns and light triumphant breaks, when beauty gilds the eastern hills and life to joy awakes. 2 Not, as of old, a little child, to bear, and fight, and die, but crowned with glory like the sun that lights the morning sky. 3 O brighter than the rising morn when he, victorious, rose and left the lonesome place of death, despite the rage of foes. 4 O brighter than that glorious morn shall this fair morning be, when Christ, our King, in beauty comes, and we his face shall see! 5 The King shall come when morning dawns and light and beauty brings. Hail, Christ the Lord! Thy people pray: come quickly, King of kings. Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Advent Languages: English Tune Title: ST STEPHEN

The Lord will come and not be slow

Author: John Milton, 1608-1674 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #55 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 The Lord will come and not be slow, his footsteps cannot err; before him righteousness shall go, his royal harbinger. 2 Truth from the earth, like to a flower, shall bud and blossom then; and justice, from her heavenly bower, look down on mortal men. 3 Rise, God, judge thou the earth in might, this wicked earth redress; for thou art he who shalt by right the nations all possess. 4 The nations all whom thou hast made shall come, and all shall frame to bow them low before thee, Lord, and glorify thy name. 5 For great thou art, and wonders great by thy strong hand are done: thou in thy everlasting seat remainest God alone. Fountain of good, to own Thy love

Author: P. Doddridge; E. Osler Hymnal: The Church Hymnal #269 (1898) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Fountain of good, to own Thy love Our thankful hearts incline; What can we render, Lord, to Thee, When all the worlds are Thine? 2 But Thou hast needy brethren here, Partakers of Thy grace, Whose names Thou wilt Thyself confess Before the Father's face. 3 In each sad accent of distress Thy pleading voice is heard; In them Thou may'st be clothed and fed And visited and cheered. 4 Help us then, Lord, Thy yoke to wear, And joy to do Thy will; Each other's burdens gladly bear, And love's sweet law fulfill. 5 Thy face with reverence and with love We in Thy poor would see; And while we minister to them, Would do it as to Thee. 6 Do Thou, O Lord, our alms accept, And with Thy blessing speed; Bless us in giving; greatly bless Our gifts to them that need. Author: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #638 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 In token that thou shalt not fear Christ crucified to own, we print the cross upon thee here, and stamp thee his alone. 2 In token that thou shalt not blush to glory in his name, we blazon here upon thy front his glory and his shame. 3 In token that thou shalt not flinch Christ's quarrel to maintain, but 'neath His banner manfully firm at thy post remain; 4 in token that thou too shalt tread the path he travelled by, endure the cross, despise the shame, and sit thee down on high; 5 thus outwardly and visibly we seal thee for his own: and may the brow that wears his cross hereafter share his crown. God Moves in a Mysterious Way

Author: William Cowper Hymnal: Lutherförbundets Sångbok #E31 (1913) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform: He plants His footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm. 2 Deep in unfathomable mines Of never-failing skill, He treasures up his bright designs, And works His sov'reign will. 3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take: The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break In blessings on your head. 4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust Him for His grace; Behind a frowning Providence He hides a smiling face. 5 His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding every hour: The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flower. 6 Blind unbelief is sure to err, And scan His works in vain: God is His own interpreter, And He will make it plain. Oh, for a Closer Walk with God

Author: William Cowper Hymnal: Lutherförbundets Sångbok #E32 (1913) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Oh, for a closer walk with God, A calm and heavenly frame; A light to shine upon the road That leads me to the Lamb! 2 Return, O holy Dove, return, Sweet Messenger of rest! I hate the sins that made Thee mourn, And drove Thee from my breast. 3 The dearest idol I have known, Whate'er that idol be, Help me to tear it from Thy throne, And worship only Thee. 4 So shall my walk be close with God, Calm and serene my frame; So purer light shall mark the road That leads me to the Lamb. O happy is the man who hears

Hymnal: The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook #R11 (2004) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 O happy is the man who hears instruction’s warning voice; and who celestial Wisdom makes his early, only choice. 2 For she has treasures greater far than east or west unfold; and her rewards more precious are than all their stores of gold. 3 In her right hand she holds to view a length of happy days; riches, with splendid honours join'd, are what her left displays. 4 She guides the young with innocence, in pleasure’s paths to tread, a crown of glory she bestows upon the hoary head. 5 According as her labours rise, so her rewards increase; her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Behold th' amazing gift of love

Hymnal: The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook #R63 (2004) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Behold th’ amazing gift of love the Father hath bestow'd on us, the sinful sons of men, to call us sons of God! 2 Conceal'd as yet this honour lies, by this dark world unknown, a world that knew not when he came, ev’n God’s eternal Son 3 High is the rank we now possess; but higher we shall rise; though what we shall hereafter be is hid from mortal eyes: 4 Our souls, we know, when he appears, shall bear his image bright; for all his glory, full disclos'd, shall open to our sight. 5 A hope so great, and so divine, may trials well endure; and purge the soul from sense and sin, as Christ himself is pure. Awake, Glad Soul

Author: John Monsell Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #60 Meter: 8.6.8.6 First Line: Awake, glad soul! awake! awake Lyrics: 1. Awake, glad soul! awake! awake! Thy Lord has risen long; Go to His grave, and with thee take Both tuneful heart and song. 2. Where life is waking all around, Where love’s sweet voices sing, The first bright blossom may be found Of an eternal spring. 3. The shade and gloom of life are fled This resurrection day; Henceforth in Christ are no more dead, The grave hath no more prey. 4. In Christ we live, in Christ we sleep, In Christ we wake and rise, And the sad tears death makes us weep, He wipes from all our eyes. 5. And every bird and every tree, And every opening flower, Proclaim His glorious victory, His resurrection power. 6. The folds are glad, the fields rejoice, With vernal verdure spread, The little hills lift up their voice And shout that death is dead. 7. Then wake, glad heart! awake! awake And seek Thy risen Lord; Joy in His resurrection take, And comfort in His Word. 8. And let thy life, through all its ways, One long thanksgiving be: Its theme of joy, its song of praise— Christ died, and rose for me. Languages: English Tune Title: ST. STEPHEN

The King shall come when morning dawns

Author: John Brownlie Hymnal: The Hymnal #70 (1916) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: The King shall come when morning dawns, And light triumphant breaks; When beauty gilds the eastern hills, And life to joy awakes. O brighter than the rising morn When he, victorious, rose, And left the lonesome place of death, Despite the rage of foes; O brighter than that glorious morn Shall this fair morning be, When Christ, our King, in beauty comes, And we his face shall see. God's mercies I will ever sing

Hymnal: The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook #P89b (2004) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 God’s mercies I will ever sing; and with my mouth I shall thy faithfulness make to be known to generations all. 2 For mercy shall be built, said I, for ever to endure; thy faithfulness even in the heavens thou wilt establish sure. 3 I with my chosen one have made a covenant graciously; and to my servant whom I loved, to David sworn have I; 4 that I thy seed establish shall for ever to remain, and will to generations all thy throne build and maintain. 5 The praises of thy wonders, Lord, the heavens shall express; the assembly of the holy ones shall praise thy faithfulness. 6 For who in heaven with the Lord may once himself compare? Who is like God among the sons of those that mighty are? 7 Great fear in meeting of the saints is due unto the Lord; and he of all about him should with reverence be adored. 8 O Lord, the God of hosts, who can to thee compared be? The might One, the Lord, whose truth doth round encompass thee. 9 Even in the raging of the sea thou over it dost reign; and when the waves thereof do rise, thou stillest them again. 10 Rahab in pieces thou didst break, like one that slaughtered is; and with thy mighty arm thou hast dispersed thine enemies. 11 The heavens are thine, thou for thine own the earth dost also take; the world, and fulness of the same, thou by thy power didst make. 12 The north and south from thee alone their first beginning had; both Tabor mount and Hermon hill shall in thy name be glad. 13 Thou hast an arm that’s full of power, thy hand is great in might; and thy right hand exceedingly exalted is in height. 14 Justice and judgment of thy throne are made the dwelling-place; mercy, accompanied with truth, shall go before thy face.1 15 O greatly blessed the people are the joyful sound that know; in brightness of thy face, O Lord, they ever on shall go. 16 They in thy name shall all the day rejoice exceedingly; and in thy righteousness shall they exalted be on high. 17 Because the glory of their strength doth only stand in thee; and in thy favour shall our horn and power exalted be. 18 For to the Lord belongs our shield, that doth us safety bring: and unto Israel's Holy One the man that is our king. Scripture: Psalm 89:1-18 Languages: English Tune Title: ST STEPHEN (NEWINGTON)
