Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CXI (1792) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Salvation by Grace; Salvation by Grace First Line: Grace, 'tis a charming sound Lyrics: 1 Grace! 'tis a charming sound! Harmonious to the ear! Heaven with the echo shall resound, And all the earth shall hear. 2 Grace first contriv'd the way To save rebellious man, And all the steps that grace display, Which drew the wondrous plan. 3 [Grace first inscrib'd my name In God's eternal book: 'Twas grace that gave me to the Lamb, Who all my sorrows took.] 4 Grace led my roving feet To tread the heavenly road; And new supplies each hour I meet, While pressing on to God. 5 [Grace taught my soul to pray, And made my eyes o'erflow: 'Twas grace which kept me to this day, And will not let me go.] 6 Grace all the work shall crown, Thro' everlasting days; It lays in Heaven the topmost stone; And well deserves the praise. By Grace I'm Saved, Grace Free and Boundless

Author: Christian L. Scheidt Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #456 (1990) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Topics: The Way of Salvation Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; my soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No; then this word must true remain: by grace you, too, shall heav'n obtain. 2 By grace! Salvation unto Us Has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Hymnal: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #430 (2018) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come by God’s free grace and favor. Our works cannot avert our doom; the law can save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, who for his people did atone; he is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in his law demand and none to him could render caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand for man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not the pure desires God's holy law of us requires, and lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream that God his law had given so sinners could themselves redeem and by their works gain heaven. The law is just a mirror bright to bring the inbred sin to light that lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain; sin held its sway unceasing. The task was hopeless and in vain; our guilt was e’er increasing. None can remove sin’s poisoned dart or purify our guileful heart, so deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the law must be fulfilled or we must die despairing, Christ Jesus came; God’s wrath he stilled, our human nature sharing. The law he has for us obeyed and thus the Father’s vengeance stayed which over us had rulèd. 6 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise to Father, Son, and Spirit, the God who saved us by his grace-- all glory to his merit! O triune God in heav’n above, who has revealed your saving love, your blessèd name be hallowed. Scripture: Romans 3:21-31 Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL

By Grace I'm Saved

Author: Christian L. Scheidt Hymnal: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #432 (2018) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Topics: Salvation by Grace First Line: By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless Lyrics: 1 By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; my soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No; then this word must true remain: by grace you too shall heav'n obtain. 2 By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; our works and conduct have no worth. God in his love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; his death did for our sins atone, and we are saved by grace alone. 3 By grace God's Son, our only Savior, came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit that Jesus died your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, that brought him from his heav'nly throne. 4 By grace! O mark this word of promise when you are by your sins oppressed, when Satan plagues your troubled conscience, and when your heart is seeking rest. What reason cannot comprehend God by his grace to you will send. 5 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, in tribulation's furnace tried, by grace, in spite of fear and trouble, the Father's heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure, if grace were not my anchor sure? 6 By grace! On this I'll rest when dying; in Jesus' promise I rejoice; for though I know my heart's condition, I also know my Savior's voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown, since I am saved by grace alone. 7 By grace! This ground of faith is certain; so long as God is true, it stands. Distinguishing Grace

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CX (1792) Topics: Salvation by Grace First Line: In songs of sublime adoration and praise Lyrics: 1 In songs of sublime adoration and praise, Ye pilgrims for Sion who press, Break forth, and extol the great ancient of days, His rich and distinguishing grace. 2 His love from eternity fix'd upon you, Broke forth and discover'd its flame, And now with the cords of his kindness he draws, And brings us to love his great name. 3 O had he not pitied the state you were in, Your bosoms his love had ne'er felt, You all would have liv'd, would have dy'd too in sin And sunk with the load of our guilt. 4 What was there in man that could merit esteem, Or give the Creator delight? 'Twas "even so, Father," you ever must sing, "Because it seem'd good in thy sight." 5 'Twas all of thy grace we were bro't to obey While others were suffer'd to go, The road which by nature we chose as our way, Which leads to the regions of woe. 6 Then give all the glory to his holy name; To him all the glory belongs; Be yours the high joys still to sound forth his fame, And crown him in each of your songs. Out of the depths I cry to Thee

Author: Martin Luther Hymnal: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes #391 (1899) Topics: Salvation By Grace Lyrics: 1 Our of the depths I cry to Thee, Lord God, O hear my wailing! Thy gracious ear incline to me, And make my prayer availing! On my misdeeds in mercy look, O deign to blot them from Thy book, Or who can stand before Thee? 2 Thou canst be merciful while just,-- This is my hope's foundation; On Thy redeeming grace I trust,-- Grant me, then, Thy salvation. Shielded by Thee, I stand secure; Thy word is firm, Thy promise sure, And I rely upon Thee. 3 Like those who watch for midnight's hour To hail the dawning morrow, I wait for Thee, I trust Thy power, Unmoved by doubt or sorrow. So thus let Israel hope in Thee, And he shall find Thy mercy free, And Thy redemption plenteous. 4 Where'er the greatest sins abound, By grace they are exceeded; Thy helping hand is always found With aid, where aid is needed: Thy hand, the only hand to save, Will rescue Israel from the grace, And pardon his transgression. Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Author: Robert Robinson Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #457 (1990) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: The Way of Salvation Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Come, thou fount of ev'ry blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of God's unchanging love. 2 Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand'ring from the fold of God: he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. 3 O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be; let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wand'ring heart to thee. Prone to wander – Lord, I feel it – prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above. Scripture: 1 Samuel 7:12 Languages: English Tune Title: NETTLETON

Lord, we confess our numerous faults

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #338 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Lord, we confess our numerous faults, How great our guilt has been! Foolish and vain were all our thoughts, And all our lives were sin. 2 But, O my soul, for ever praise, For ever love his name Who turns thy feet from dangerous ways Of folly, sin, and shame. 3 'Tis not by works of righteousness Which our own hands have done; But we are sav'd by sovereign grace Abounding through his Son. 4 'Tis from the mercy of our God That all our hopes begin; 'Tis by the water and the blood Our souls are wash'd from sin. 5 'Tis through the purchase of his death Who hung upon the tree, The Spirit is sent down to breathe On such dry bones as we. 6 Rais'd from the dead we live anew; And, justified by grace, We shall appear in glory too, And see our Father's face. We are redeemed from guilt and shame and called to holiness. But not for works which we have done, or shall hereafter do, hath God decreed on sinful men salvation to bestow. 2 The glory, Lord, from first to last, is due to thee alone; aught to ourselves we dare not take, or rob thee of thy crown. Our glorious Surety undertook to satisfy for man, and grace was given us in him before the world began. 3 This is thy will, that in thy love we ever should abide; that earth and hell should not prevail to turn thy word aside. Foolish and vain were all our Thoughts, And all our Lives were Sin. 2 But, O my Soul, for ever praise, For ever love his Name, Who turns thy Feet from dang'rous Ways, Of Folly, Sin, and Shame.] [3 'Tis not by Works of Righteousness, Which our own Hands have done; But we are sav'd by Sov'reign Grace, Abounding through his Son.] 4 'Tis from the Mercy of our God That all our Hopes begin; 'Tis by the Water and the Blood Our Souls are wash'd from Sin. 5 'Tis through the Purchase of his Death Who hung upon the Tree, The Spirit is sent down to breathe On such dry Bones as we. 6 Rais'd from the Dead we live anew; And justify'd by Grace, We shall appear in Glory too, And see our Father's Face. All Praise to God, Who Reigns Above

Author: Johann J. Schütz; Frances E. Cox Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #4 (1990) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 All praise to God, who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of wonders, pow'r, and love, the God of our salvation! With healing balm my soul he fills, the God who every sorrow stills. To God all praise and glory! 2 What God's almighty pow'r hath made his gracious mercy keepeth; by morning dawn or evening shade his watchful eye ne'er sleepeth; within the kingdom of his might, lo, all is just and all is right. To God all praise and glory! 3 I cried to him in time of need: Lord God, O hear my calling! For death he gave me life indeed and kept my feet from falling. For this my thanks shall endless be; O thank him, thank our God, with me. To God all praise and glory! 4 The Lord forsaketh not his flock, his chosen generation; he is their refuge and their rock, their peace and their salvation. As with a mother's tender hand he leads his own, his chosen band. To God all praise and glory! 5 Ye who confess Christ's holy name, to God give praise and glory! Ye who the Father's pow'r proclaim, to God give praise and glory! All idols underfoot be trod, the Lord is God! The Lord is God! To God all praise and glory! 6 Then come before his presence now and banish fear and sadness; to your Redeemer pay your vow and sing with joy and gladness: Though great distress my soul befell, the Lord, my God, did all things well, To God all praise and glory! Out of the depths I cry to Thee

Hymnal: Christian Hymns #227 (1898) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Out of the depths I cry to Thee, Lord, hear me, I implore Thee! In grace Thine ear incline to me, My prayer let come before Thee! If Thou remember each misdeed, If each should have its rightful meed, Lord, who can stand before Thee? 2 Our pardon is Thy gift; Thy love And grace alone avail us. Our works could ne'er our guilt remove, The strictest life must fail us. None guiltless in Thy sight appear; All who approach Thy throne must fear, And humbly trust Thy mercy. 3 And thus my hope is in Thee, Lord, And not in mine own merit; I rest upon Thy faithful word To them of contrite spirit. Shielded by Thee I stand secure; Thy grace is free, Thy promise sure: Thereon my hope is builded. 4 Like those who watch for midnight's hour To hail the dawning morrow, I wait for Thee, I trust Thy power. Unmoved by doubt or sorrow. So thus let Israel hope in Thee, And he shall find Thy mercy free, And Thy redemption plenteous. 5 Where'er the greatest sins abound, By grace they are exceeded; Thy helping hand is always found With aid, where aid is needed: Thy hand, the only hand to save, Will rescue Israel from the grave, And pardon his transgression. Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched

Author: Joseph Hart Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #472 (1990) Meter: 8.7.8.7.4.4.4.7.7 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity joined with pow'r: he is able, he is able, he is able, he is willing; doubt no more; he is willing; doubt no more. 2 Come, ye needy, come and welcome, God's free bounty glorify; true belief and true repentance, ev'ry grace that brings you nigh, without money, without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy; come to Jesus Christ and buy. 3 Come, ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall; if you tarry till you're better, you will never come at all: not the righteous, not the righteous, not the righteous– sinners Jesus came to call; sinners Jesus came to call. 4 Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; all the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him; this he gives you, this he gives you, this he gives you; 'tis the Spirit's rising beam; 'tis the Spirit's rising beam. 5 Lo! th'incarnate God, ascended, pleads the merit of his blood; venture on him, venture wholly, let no other trust intrude: none but Jesus, none but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good, can do helpless sinners good. Cox Hymnal: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #214 (2018) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of pow'r, the God of love, the God of our salvation. My soul with comfort rich he fills, and ev'ry grief he gently stills: to God all praise and glory! 2 What God's almighty pow'r has made, in mercy he is keeping; by morning glow or evening shade his eye is never sleeping. And where he rules in kingly might, there all is just and all is right: to God all praise and glory! 3 We sought the Lord in our distress; O God, in mercy hear us. Our Savior saw our helplessness and came with peace to cheer us. For this we thank and praise the Lord, who is by one and all adored: to God all praise and glory! 4 Let all who name Christ's holy name give God the praise and glory. Author: Robert Robinson Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal #400 (1961) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Christian Life Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Come, thou Fount of ev'ry blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. From depths of woe I raise to thee

Author: Martin Luther Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal #461 (1961) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 From depths of woe I raise to thee The voice of lamentation; Lord, turn a gracious ear to me And hear my supplication: If thou iniquities dost mark, Our secret sins and misdeeds dark, O who shall stand before thee? 2 To wash away the crimson stain, Grace, grace alone availeth; Our works, alas! are all in vain; In much the best life faileth: No man can glory in thy sight, All must alike confess thy might, And live alone by mercy. 3 Therefore my trust is in the Lord, And not in mine own merit; On him my soul shall rest, his Word Upholds my fainting spirit: His promised mercy is my fort, My comfort and my sweet support; I wait for it with patience. 4 What though I wait the livelong night, And till the dawn appeareth, My heart still trusteth in his might; It doubteth not nor feareth: Do thus, O ye of Israel's seed, Ye of the Spirit born indeed; And wait till God appeareth. 5 Though great our sins and sore our woes His grace much more aboundeth; His helping love no limit knows, Our utmost need it soundeth. Not What My Hands Have Done

Author: Horatius Bonar Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #461 (1990) Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Topics: The Way of Salvation Salvation by Grace Lyrics: 1 Not what my hands have done can save my guilty soul; not what my toiling flesh has borne can make my spirit whole. Not what I feel or do can give me peace with God; not all my prayers and sighs and tears can bear my awful load. 2 Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin; thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within. Thy love to me, O God, not mine, O Lord to thee, can rid me of this dark unrest, and set my spirit free. 3 Thy grace alone, O God, to me can pardon speak; thy pow'r alone, O Son of God, can this sore bondage break. No other work, save thine, no other blood will do; no strength, save that which is divine, can bear me safely through. 4 I bless the Christ of God; I rest on love divine; and with unfalt'ring lip and heart, I call this Savior mine. This cross dispels each doubt; I bury in his tomb each thought of unbelief and fear, each ling'ring shade of gloom. 5 I praise the God of grace; I trust his truth and might; he calls me his, I call him mine, my God, my joy, my light. 'Tis he who saveth me, and freely pardon gives; I love because he loveth me, I live because he lives. Scripture: Titus 3:5 Languages: English Tune Title: LEOMINSTER
