Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, Savior of the Nations, Come. Consisting of Prologue, Introduction, and six variations, this suite traces the history of the famous Advent melody from its origins in twelfth-century chant through its manifestations in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Selected movements may serve as voluntaries, hymn introductions, accompaniments, and versets. The final movement, in six-eight meter, brings the suite to a rollicking conclusion.
