The Rev. Dr. Charles L. Hutchins was the Rector of Grace Church, Medford, Mass., and was for many years Secretary of the House of Deputies of General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S.A. He published in 1870 a hymnal with music, words compiled by the Rev. Dr. Herman Griswold Batterson, with some additions. He also published a version of the 1871-74 authorized Episcopal Hymnal. His edition of the 1892 Hymnal was the most popular and most widely used of all the musical editions of this book (of which there were at least six).
