Representative Text

1 I did not believe the story
Of a resurrection day,
Then the grave so dark and gloomy
Filled my soul with deep dismay;
But I found one blessèd morning
Every doubt was cleared away,
As I stood beside the cross of Jesus.

Refrain:
Yes, I found it at the cross,
I found it at the cross,
At the cross, the blessèd cross of Jesus;
There I found one blessèd morning
Every doubt was cleared away,
As I stood beside the cross of Jesus.

2 So altho’ I first drew near it
When the world seemed dark and drear,
Soon my heart was filled with singing
When I heard the words of cheer;
As the blessèd Holy Spirit
Whispered to me, Do not fear,
There is hope in yonder cross of Jesus. [Refrain]

3 At the blessed cross of Jesus,
There I saw my pathway clear,
At the blessed cross of Jesus,
There He wiped away each tear;
There I buried every sorrow,
There I buried every fear,
As I bowed before the cross of Jesus. [Refrain]

4 Now I take there all my burdens,
There I carry every care,
And I give them to the Master,
So no longer I despair;
Some sweet day my Lord will call me
To come meet Him in the air,
As I wait beside the cross of Jesus. [Refrain]

Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. His father was an excellent singer, and it always delighted the son to sit by his side and hear him sing the songs of the church. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton… Go to person page >
