1 Lad andre hen i Trældom gaa,
med Loven sig bemøde,
Som ei har fanget Smaa oppaa
Den Friheds Himmel-Grøde,
Som vi ved Jesu dyre Død
Og Pine nød,
Hvorfor han maatte bløde.

2 Lav Hagar med sin Børne-Flok
I villig Trældom være,
Vi aldrig kan fuldtakke nok
Og give Herren Ære.
Som ved sin Søn bort fra os tog
Det Lovens Aag,
Som vi ei kunde bære.

3 Din Kirke og Jerusalem,
Din fande Flok paa Jorden,
Som har i Himmelen sit Hjem,
Hvor den er tegnet vorden,
Den følger Jesus i hans Ord
Og derved gror,
Befri't fra Lovens Torden.

4 En Tid skal komme, naar den skal
Med Friheds Krone gange,
Og udi Himlens Glædefal
Istemme Seier-Sange,
Haar, med Vantroens Ismael,
Hver Lovens Træl
Skal blive Dødsens Fange.

Thomas Hansen Kingo (15 December 1634 – 14 October 1703 Odense) was a Danish bishop, poet and hymn-writer born at Slangerup, near Copenhagen. His work marked the high point of Danish baroque poetry. He belonged to a rather poor family partly of Scottish origin and was educated a clergyman. In his youth, Kingo wrote a series of poems picturing humorous scenes in village life and a pastoral love poem, Chrysillis. He studied theology at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1654, and for some time acted as private tutor. In 1661 he was appointed vicar to the pastor at Kirke Helsinge, and in 1668 he was ordained a minister at his native town, where his poetic activity began.
