Representative Text

1 There stood three Marys by the tomb
On Easter morning early;
When day had scarcely chased the gloom,
And dew was white and pearly:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
With loving but with erring mind,
They came the Prince of Life to find,
They came the Prince of Life to find.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

2 But earlier still the angel sped,
His news of comfort giving;
And "Why," he said, “among the dead
Thus seek ye for the living?”
Alleluia! Alleluia!
"Go, tell them all, and make them blest;
Tell Peter first, and then the rest,
Tell Peter first, and then the rest."
Alleluia! Alleluia!

3 But one, and one alone, remained,
With love that could not vary;
And thus a joy past joy she gained,
That sometime sinner, Mary;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
The first the blessèd form to see
Of Him that hung upon the tree,
Of Him that hung upon the tree;
Alleluia! Alleluia!

4 The world itself keeps Easter Day,
The Heav’n above is beaming;
All in high festival array
The merry bells are gleaming.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
The Lord hath risen, as all things tell;
Good Christians, see ye rise as well,
Good Christians, see ye rise as well!
Alleluia! Alleluia!

John M. Neale's life is a study in contrasts: born into an evangelical home, he had sympathies toward Rome; in perpetual ill health, he was incredibly productive; of scholarly temperament, he devoted much time to improving social conditions in his area; often ignored or despised by his contemporaries, he is lauded today for his contributions to the church and hymnody. Neale's gifts came to expression early–he won the Seatonian prize for religious poetry eleven times while a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1842, but ill health and his strong support of the Oxford Movement kept him from ordinary parish ministry. So Neale spent the years between 1846 and 1866 as a warden of Sackvi… Go to person page >
