Til Hyrder fromme

Representative Text

1 Til Hyrder fromme,
Paa Vagt i Davids Stad,
Guds Engle komme
I Ring og Række-Rad.
Som Jomfru'r kloge,
Paa Rakels Taare-Vang
De Hyrder vaage,
Og vente Natten lang,
Da lysned Taage,
Da lød der Englesang.

2 Gud lad mig høre
Den paa mig Hjertes Mark!
Gud lad mig føre
Deri Guds Tempels Ark!
Guds Lys oprinde,
Guds Fred i Jesus Krist,
Gud lad mig finde,
Jeg har hans Naade vist,
Gud lad mig vinde
Min Seier ved ham tilsidst!

3 Vor Dag gaar under,
Og Natten falder paa,
Snart Enden stunder,
Hjælp, Gud, vi vaagne staa
Med Lamper tændte,
Naar sidste Oprach sker!
Vi har i Vente
Det, som er meget mer,
Han vil os hente
Hjem til sig der, han er.

4 O Gud, hvor ilde,
Om Dagen bort er drømt!
Gid hver dog vilde
Indhente alt forsømt!
O væk os, Herre,
Og tugt os til at staa,
Som det bør være,
Med fuld Guds Rustning paa,
At vi med Ære
Tilsidst kan Seier faa!

5 Med Gud i Tanker,
I Hjertet Jesu Navn,
Vi kaste Anker
I Salighedens Havn.
Lad os den finde,
før Dagen vorder slukt;
Lys Fred herinde,
Send Fryd og salig Frugt;
Den Fødsels Minde
Os være Trøst og Tugt!

Magnus Brostrup Landstad (born 7 October 1802 in Måsøy, Norway and died 8 October 1880 in Kristiania) was a Norwegian minister, psalmist and poet who published the first collection of authentic Norwegian traditional ballads in 1853. This work was criticized for unscientific methods, but today it is commonly accepted that he contributed significantly to the preservation of the traditional ballads. He took a theological degree (cand. theol) in 1827, and worked after that as the resident chaplain in Gausdal for six years.
