Hymnary Friends,

As our fall/winter fund drive winds down, please consider a gift today to support the work of Hymnary.org. We're behind where we have been in past years with this drive, and we are hoping to catch up a little between now and January 1, 2019!

Please know that we want to keep Hymnary (the most complete database of North American hymnody on the planet) going for many years to come. Your donations help us do that. Even small amounts help, and they also let us know you're behind us and support what we do.

Click the Donate button below to be taken to a secure giving site. Or you can make your tax-deductible contribution by sending a check to Hymnary.org at 3201 Burton SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

On behalf of the entire Hymnary.org team, our thanks.

Representative Text

1 Vær trøstig, Zion, Jesu Brud,
Nok har du grædt og grundet!
O gjør dig rede, se herud,
Dit Lys er nu oprundet,
Og Herrens store Herlighed,
Din Jesus, er nu kommen ned,
Nu har du Naade fundet.

2 Vanvittighedens Mulm og Mørk'
Er stort paa Jorderige,
Folk gaa som i en taaget Ørk,
Veed lidt af Gud at sige.
Men Jesus, Verdens Lys, er se't,
Som i vort Kjød sig haver ted,
Thi skal al Mørkhed vige.

3 Han skal for dem, der nu i Slum
Og Sjæleblindhed vanke,
Ved Glædens Evangelium
Oplyse Sind og Tanke,
Saa Hedninger skal eftertraa
Udi dit store Lys at gaa,
Og salig Trøst at sanke.

4 Luk Øine op, giv nøie Agt,
Hvor hedninger de komme
Til Herrens store Naade-Pagt
Blandt andre mange Fromme;
Som Sønner og som Døtre de
Sjal Abgang faa til Gud at se,
O dybe Herrens Domme!

5 Da skal dit Hjerte flyde ud
I store Glæde-Strømme,
Naar du skal se en kristen Brud
Af hedensk Herredømme,
Der skal med Guld og Røgelse
For Jesus Kristus frem sig te,
Hans Manddom at berømme.

6 O Jesus, du, som Manddom tag,
Hjælp os at se og kjende,
At du os skrev i Livsens Bog,
Og giv, vi kunde vende
Vort Guld og Gods, vor Sind og Sjæl
Til alt det, dig behager vel,
Indtil vor sidste Ende!

He studied theology at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1654, and for some time acted as private tutor. In 1661 he was appointed vicar to the pastor at Kirke Helsinge, and in 1668 he was ordained a minister at his native town, where his poetic activity began.
