Var hälsad, sköna morgonstund

Representative Text

1 Var hälsad, sköna morgonstund,
Som av profeters helga mun
Är oss bebådad vorden!
Du stora dag, du sälla dag,
På vilken himlens välbehag
ännu besöker jorden!
Unga sjunga Med de gamla;
Sig församla Jordens böner
Kring den störste av dess söner.

2 Guds väsens avbild och likväl
En mänskoson, på det var själ
Må glad till honom lända,
Han kommer, följd av frid och hopp,
De villade att söka opp,
Och hjälpa de elända,
Värma, närma Till varandra,
Dem, som vandra Kärlesksösa
Och ur usla brunnar ösa.

3 Han tärar fälla skall som vi,
Förstå vår nöd och stå oss bi
Med kraften av sin Anda,
Förkunna oss sin Faders råd
Och sötman av en evig nåd
I sorgekalken blanda;
Strida, lida,
Dödens smärta,
Att vårt hjärta
Frid må vinna
Och en öppnad himmel finna.

4 Han kommer, till vår frälsning sänd,
Och nådens sol, av honom tänd,
Skall sig ej mera dölja.
Han själv vå herde vara vill,
Att vi må honom höra till
Och honom efterfölja,
Nöjda, höjda Över tiden,
Och i friden, Av hans rike
En gång varda honom like.

Author: Johan Olaf Wallin

Johan Olaf Wallin was born at Stora Tuna, in 1779, and early displayed his poetical powers. In 1805, and again in 1809, he gained the chief prize for poetry at Upsala. In the latter year he became pastor at Solna; here his ability as a preacher was so striking that he was transferred to Stockholm, in 1815, as "pastor primarius," a title for which we have no exact equivalent. In 1818 he was made Dean of Westeras, and set about the task of editing a revised hymn-book for the whole of Sweden. This task he completed in 1819, and published it as, Den Swenska Psalmboken, af Konungen gillad och stadfästad (The Swedish hymn-book, approved and confirmed by the King). To it he contributed some 150 hymns of his own, besides translations and recasting… Go to person page >

Tune

WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET

Adapting a tune written for Psalm 100 found in Wolff Köphel's Psalter (1538), Nicolai composed WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET, which was published with the text in 1599. Although the tune was originally more varied rhythmically, the hymnal version here is isorhythmic (all equal rhythms) and set to the rich ha…
