During our last fund drive a donor said this: "Covid-19 rules prevent us from singing during my husband's burial service, so we will play the tune while we read the printed words or hum along with the music." Needless to say, this testimony struck us and stuck with us. We never know on any given day how Hymnary.org will be a blessing to people, but we know that around the world, the site is making a powerful difference in the lives of many.

Thanks to all who use Hymnary.org and all who support it with gifts of time, talent and treasure. If you feel moved to support our work today with a gift of any amount and a word of encouragement, we would be grateful.

What though my joys and comfort die?
The Lord my savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.

Representative Text

1 Vidunderligst af alt paa Jord
Er Jesu Kristi Rige,
Dets Herlighed er og saa stor,
At det har ingen Lige.

2 Usynligt vel, som Sjæl og Sind,
Det næmt dog er et kjende,
Alt som en By paa Berge-Tind
Det sees til Verdens Ende.

3 Dets Under er et Guddoms-Ord,
Som skaber, hvad det nævner,
Som fylder Dale trindt paa Jord,
Og Høiene udjævner.

4 Med det indvies Jesu Daab,
Velsignes Jesu Bæger,
Saa hist udspringer Livets Haab,
Og her det vederkvæger.

5 Med det der skabes gode Kaar
For Herrens Kjæmper lave,
At de kan le ad Banesaar,
Og springe over Grave.

6 Med det der skabes Vin af Vand,
Og Pardis af Ørke,
Med et der skabes Lys om Land,
Mens Verden gaar i Mørke.

7 Lad høres kun det Raab, som gaar,
At riget er lagt øde,
Gud kroner ligefuldt sit Aar
med Frugtbarhed og Grøde.

8 Dets Glans opstaar som Aks i Bang,
Som Bar i visne Skove,
Ja prægtig, som med Fuglesnag
Den gylden Sol af Vove.

9 Og naar han kommer i det blaa,
Er Kristnes Kamp til Ende,
Hvad Troende i Speilet saa,
De Salige skal kjende.

10 Da riget er med Sole-Kaar
Tilsyne og tilstede
i Eveghedens Gylden-Aar
Med Ret og Fred og Glæde.

Nicolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig was the son of a pastor, and was born at Udby, in Seeland, in 1783. He studied in the University of Copenhagen from 1800-1805; and, like some other eminent men, did not greatly distinguish himself; his mind was too active and his imagination too versatile to bear the restraint of the academic course. After leaving the university he took to teaching; first in Langeland, then (1808) in Copenhagen. Here he devoted his attention to poetry, literature, and Northern antiquities. In 1810 he became assistant to his father in a parish in Jutland. The sermon he preached at his ordination, on the subject "Why has the Lord's word disappeared from His house," attracted much attention, which is rarely the case with "pro… Go to person page >
