John’s preached a baptism of repentance to prepare the way of the Lord (Matthew 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4-6). This Advent hymn calls us also to repentance, asking God to heal and cleanse us so we too can make straight the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3).
