Robert Bennett was born at Bakewell, Derbyshire in 1787. His family moved to Cambridge when he was young and he became a chorister at King's College. He took music lessons from Dr. Clarke Whitfield. In 1811 he was appointed organist of the parish church in Sheffield. He was a close friend of William Sterndale, who he named his son after. (See William Sterndale Bennett) Robert Bennett composed several hymn tunes.
