29. My soul seeks repose in thee

1 My soul seeks repose in Thee,
Jesus Christ, my Lord.
Do not close the door to me,
Let me hear Thy word.
Heed my request.
I am seeking peace and rest;
Only Thou canst end my quest
And give me rest.

2 Enemies surround me here
And disturb my peace.
So I walk each day in fear,
Pray to find release.
Oh, give me rest.
For Thou art the fount of rest,
Thou alone canst give it best,
eternal rest.

3 Often I am led astray
When the wicked foe
Tempts with glittering array
That brings only woe
And brings no rest.
Save me, Lord, I am oppressed,
Hear, oh, hear my soul's request,
Give heav'nly rest.

3 Like a broken reed am I
Swaying to and fro,
And my soul to Thee doth cry.
Shepherd, end my woe.
Oh, give me rest.
I am weary and distressed;
Lord, Thou art the source of rest,
Grant my request.

5 Early Thou hath sought to save
My beleaguered soul,
But no heed to Thee I gave.
Pleasure was my goal.
I found no rest.
How to find it is my quest
And remorse now fills my breast.
Lord, give me rest.

6 As a wand'rer wearily
Seeks a tree for shade,
Hopes the journey's end to see
Ere it is too late,
And seeks to rest,
So will I renew my quest,
Hoping to find peace and rest,
Lord, at Thy breast.

7 Lo, I pray come one and all
Seek this precious goal.
Heed our dear Lord's loving call.
He will free thy soul
And give thee rest.
Word of Life, hear my request,
Lamb of God, let us be blest
With heav'nly rest.

8 Once again my voice I raise,
Jesus, hear my plea.
I will ever give Thee praise,
Only let me be
Brought to Thy rest.
Lord, Thou knowest what is best.
Shepherd, hear my one request
And grant me rest.
