104. When the Ills of Life Beset Me

1 When the ills of life beset me,
And my heart is sore with loss,
Then I think of Christ, my Saviour,
As He bore His heavy cross;
And I Cry, “O shame upon you,
Coward heart, to shrink like this
‘Neath the burdens laid upon you!
What are loads like thine to His?”

Refrain:
Heart of mine, forget thy sorrow,
Think not of earth’s cares and dross,
But of Him who points the pilgrim
To the crown above the cross.

2 Christ, forgive my weak complainings,
Give me courage day by day,
For the trials that will meet me
All along my pilgrim way;
Lord, dear Lord, I do not ask Thee
Every cross to bear for me,
But the strength to bear them bravely—
Only that I ask of Thee. [Refrain]
