Further Reflections on Confessions and Statements of Faith References

In baptism, our identity is established and we are “set apart from all other people and alien religions, that we may wholly belong to [Christ] whose mark and sign we bear” (Belgic Confession, Article 34). Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 26, Question and Answer 70 assures us that “to be washed with Christ’s Spirit means that the Holy Spirit has renewed and sanctified us to be members of Christ…” We therefore are called “to join and unite with it [the church of Christ]” (Belgic Confession, Article 28). This union with Christ shapes our personal identity for all time.

Additional Prayers

A Prayer of Thanksgiving
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we give you thanks for your perfect life and sacrificial death. We give you thanks that, being rich, you became poor for our sake. We give you thanks for your resurrection and ascension, your intercession, your ceaseless love—all for us sinners who now give you grateful thanks. Amen.

That's Why We Praise Him

Hymn Story/Background

In his book, Songs From Heaven, Tommy Walker recounts a night in a hotel room after a Promise Keepers Conference where he faced the temptation of an empty room and a T.V. But instead of turning on the T.V., he got out his guitar and began to play and pray. And like God gave him a gift, he found this tune, and the words followed quickly. He wrote this song on the spot, hoping to remind himself and others that like us, Jesus had opportunities to disobey, but he remained faithful, and that is why we praise him.
