Notes: This is an excellent setting to introduce to reticent congregations. There are only two musical lines the congregation needs to learn, both of them memorable and first sung by the leader. Notice that the opening introduction is sung the first time only. After each stanza, return to the refrain. The melody may be doubled by a flute or flute stop on the organ, if desired. The rhythm patterns may be improvised on finger cymbals, hand drums, tambourines, or other available instruments. The rhythmic accompaniment should be reduced or drop out entirely after the refrain, coming back in joyfully after the solo voice sings “hallelujah!”
