139. Vesper Hymn

1 Softly the twilight is fading away,
While we assemble to praise and to pray;
Here in Thy temple at close of the day,
We linger, Lord, for Thy blessing,
Shed holy peace in the hearts waiting here;
Grant to each one perfect love without fear;
Let the sweet spirit of prayer hover near,
All worldly tho’ts now repressing.

2 Strength we implore for the conflict with sin,
Faith, thro’ the precious atonement to win;
Hope, joyous hope, like an anchor within,
Telling our cause is victorious.
Thus shall we look up and lift up to Thee,
Thou wilt our strength and deliverance be;
Till from these struggles and conflicts we’re free,
Praise to Thy name ever glorious!
