Presley (March 6, 1887 – December 6, 1974) was a songwriter, musician, and composer, who is best-known for writing the lyrics to the gospel song "When the Saints Go Marching In". Luther G. Presley was born on Beckett Mountain in Faulkner County, Arkansas on March 6, 1887. He studied music beginning at the age of 14, where he excelled. He soon became choir director. He wrote his first song, "Gladly Sing," when he was 17. He furthered his study in singing and music, under renowned teachers. Work Luther Presley wrote the lyrics for the gospel spiritual "When the Saints Go Marching In", in 1937, while Virgil O. Stamps composed the music and melody to the famous work. Luther Presley was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2008. --wikipedia.org

Witter Hymnal Number: 284 Author of "While Jesus Whispers" in Favorite Songs and Hymns Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

As the old­est son, he had his hands full sup­port­ing the fa­mi­ly, but he ma­naged to be­gin at­tend­ing a vo­cal school at age 17, un­der Pro­fes­sor T. A. Bridg­es. He lat­er stu­died un­der Ho­ra­tio Pal­mer and George A. Good­rich. He be­gan a full time mu­sic ca­reer in 1890, and with Frank­lin Ei­land and John M. Greer, and helped found the Trio Mu­sic Com­pa­ny in Wa­co, Tex­as, in 1892. He went on to es­tab­lish the Quar­tet Mu­sic Com­pa­ny in Fort Worth, Tex­as. He mar­ried twice, to Vir­gie Ce­lem­ma Stat­ton and Will­ie Man­na­sas Law­ing. Ramsey moved with his fa­mi­ly to north­west Ar­kan­sas as a child. He stu­died mu­sic in Nor­mal schools un­der Eph­ra­im Hil­de­brand, Ste­phen Os­lin, and Ben­ja­min Un­seld. He be­gan teach­ing shape notes and sing­ing while still a teen­ag­er, and be­came well known in sing­ing schools through­out the Am­er­i­can South.
