Once in royal David's city

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 410 hymnals Scripture: Acts 7:55-56 Lyrics: 1 Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her Baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2 He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall. With the poor and meek and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. 3 And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; for that Child so dear and helpless is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. 4 Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high, where his children gather round, bright like stars, with glory crowned. O Sacred Head! sore wounded

Author: James Waddell Alexander (1804-1859); Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 728 hymnals Scripture: Acts 7:54-56 Lyrics: 1 O Sacred Head! sore wounded, with grief and shame weighed down! O Kingly Head, surrounded with thorns, thine only crown! How pale art thou with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How does that face now languish, which once was bright as morn! 2 O Lord of life and glory, what bliss till now was thine! I read the wondrous story; I joy to call thee mine. Thy grief and bitter Passion were all for sinners' gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain. 3 What language shall I borrow to praise thee, heavenly Friend, for this, thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? O make me thine for ever, and, should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love for thee. 4 Be near me, Lord, when dying; O show thy cross to me; and, my last need supplying, come, Lord, and set me free; these eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never move; for they who die believing die safely through thy love. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour. 2 Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways; from the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days. 3 Cure thy children's warring madness, bend our pride to thy control; shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in goods and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal. 4 Set our feet on lofty places, gird our lives that they may be armoured with all Christlike graces in the fight till all be free. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, that we fail not earth nor thee. Topics: Proper 12 Year A; Proper 20 Year B; Second Sunday Before Advent Year C Used With Tune: WEBBE'S ST THOMAS

From All Thy Saints in Warfare

Share we with him, if summoned By death our Lord to own, On earth the faithful witness, In heav'n the martyr crown. 3 Apostles, prophets, martyrs, And all the sacred throng, Who wear the spotless raiment, Who raise the ceaseless song, For these, passed on before us, Saviour, we Thee adore, And, walking in their footsteps, Would serve Thee more and more. 4 Then praise we God the Father, And praise we God the Son, And God the Holy Spirit, Eternal Three in One; Till all the ransomed number Fall down before the throne, And honor, power, and glory Ascribe to God alone.
