James John Cummins

1795 - 1867 Person Name: James John Cummins, 1795-1867 Author of "Before You Lord, We Bow" in Praise y Adoración Cummins, James John, son of a merchant in Cork, Ireland, was born in Cork, May 5, 1795. In 1834 he removed to London, and was for many years a Director of the Union Bank of Australia. He died at Wildecroft, Buckland, Surrey, Nov. 23, 1867. He devoted much time to the study of Hebrew and Theology. He prepared for the use of his children in their preparation for Confirmation, Seals of the Covenant Opened in the Sacraments. This work, including several hymns and poems, was published in 1839. The hymns and other poetical pieces were also published in 1839 as Poetical Meditations and Hymns by the Author of The Seals of the Covenant Opened. In 1849 this work was republished with additions as Hymns, Meditations, and other Poems. The title on the cover of this work is Lyra Evangelica, and by this title it is usually known. The hymns, "Jesus, Lord of life and glory," 1839, (A Litany); "Shall hymns of grateful love," 1839, (The New Song), and others are from this work. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ================== Cummins, James John, p. 273, i. John Goss

1800 - 1880 Person Name: J. Goss, 1800—80 Composer of "[Before the Lord we bow]" in The Lutheran Hymnary John Goss (b. Fareham, Hampshire, England, 1800; d. London, England, 1880). As a boy Goss was a chorister at the Chapel Royal and later sang in the opera chorus of the Covent Garden Theater. He was a professor of music at the Royal Academy of Music (1827-1874) and organist of St. Paul Cathedral, London (1838-1872); in both positions he exerted significant influence on the reform of British cathedral music. Goss published Parochial Psalmody (1826) and Chants, Ancient and Modern (1841); he edited William Mercer's Church Psalter and Hymn Book (1854). With James Turle he published a two-volume collection of anthems and Anglican service music (1854). Bert Polman

Thomas Clark

1775 - 1859 Person Name: T. Clark Composer of "WARSAW" in Book of Worship Baptized: February 5, 1775, Canterbury, Kent, England. Died: May 30, 1859, at his home in St. George’s Street, Canterbury, Kent, England. A cobbler and choir trainer, Clark led the singing of the Psalms at the Wesleyan Chapel, Canterbury, and later at the Unitarian Church in Canterbury. It has been claimed he never actually joined the Unitarians, though he sympathized with them, and he resigned from the Methodists. Clark wrote a number of anthems, including "Awake Up, My Glory", "Daughter of Zion" and "Since I Have Placed My Trust."
