The Goodness of God

Appears in 234 hymnals Topics: Afflicted supported; Afflicted supported First Line: Sweet is the memory of thy grace Lyrics: 1 Sweet is the memory of thy grace, My God, my heavenly King; Let age to age thy righteousness In sounds of glory sing. 2 God reigns on high, but ne'er confines His goodness to the skies; Through the whole earth his bounty shines, And every want supplies. 3 With longing eyes thy creatures wait On Thee for daily food, Thy liberal hand provides their meat, And fills their mouths with good. 4 How kind are thy compassions, Lord! How slow thine anger moves! But soon he sends his pardoning word To cheer the souls he loves. 5 Creatures with all their endless race Thy power and praise proclaim; But saints that taste thy richer grace Delight to bless thy name. Scripture: Psalm 145:7-10

Psalm 102 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 64 hymnals Topics: Afflictions very great; Afflicted their prayer First Line: Hear me, O God, nor hide thy face Lyrics: Hear me, O God, nor hide thy face; But answer, lest I die; Hast thou not built a throne of grace To hear when sinners cry? My days are wasted like the smoke Dissolving in the air; My strength is dried, my heart is broke, And sinking in despair. My spirits flag like with'ring grass Burnt with excessive heat; In secret groans my minutes pass, And I forget to eat. As on some lonely building's top The sparrow tells her moan, Far from the tents of joy and hope I sit and grieve alone. My soul is like a wilderness, Where beasts of midnight howl; There the sad raven finds her place, And there the screaming owl. Dark, dismal thoughts, and boding fears, Dwell in my troubled breast; While sharp reproaches wound my ears, Nor give my spirit rest. My cup is mingled with my woes, And tears are my repast; My daily bread, like ashes, grows Unpleasant to my taste. Sense can afford no real joy To souls that feel thy frown; Lord, 'twas thy hand advanced me high, Thy hand hath cast me down. My looks like withered leaves appear; And life's declining light Grows faint as evening shadows are That vanish into night. But thou for ever art the same, O my eternal God; Ages to come shall know thy name, And spread thy works abroad. Thou wilt arise and show thy face, Nor will my Lord delay Beyond th' appointed hour of grace, That long-expected day. He hears his saints, he knows their cry, And by mysterious ways Redeems the pris'ners doomed to die, And fills their tongues with praise. Scripture: Psalm 102:1-13

When the clouds around thee gather, Doubt him not! Always hath the daylight broken Always hath he comfort spoken Better hath he been for years, Than thy fears. 4 To his own thy Saviour giveth Daily strength; To each troubled soul that liveth Peace at length: Weakest lambs have largest sharing Of this tender Shepherd's caring; Ask him not, then when or how Only bow. Broad is the road that leads to death

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 463 hymnals Topics: Afflicted saints happy Lyrics: Broad is the road that leads to death, And thousands walk together there; But wisdom shows a narrower path, With here and there a traveller. "Deny thyself, and take thy cross," Is the Redeemer's great command; Nature must count her gold but dross, If she would gain this heav'nly land. The fearful soul that tires and faints, And walks the ways of God no more, Is but esteemed almost a saint, And makes his own destruction sure. Lord, let not all my hopes be vain Create my heart entirely new; Which hypocrites could ne'er attain, Which false apostates never knew. Scripture: Psalm 73:23-28

When Man grows bold in Sin

Appears in 38 hymnals Topics: Afflicted Submission to them Lyrics: 1 When Nan grows bold in Sin, My Heart within me cries, "He hath no Faith of God within, Nor Fear before his Eyes." 2 [He walks a-while conceal'd In a Self-flatt'ring Dream, Till his dark Crimes at once reveal'd Expose his hateful Name.] 3 His Heart is false and foul, His Words are smooth and fair; Wisdom is banish'd from his Soul, And leaves no Goodness there. 4 He plots upon his Bed New Mischiefs to fulfil He sets his Heart, and Hand, and Head, To practise all that's ill. 5 But there's a dreadful GOD, Tho' Men renounce his Fear; His Justice hid behind the Cloud, Shall one great Day appear. 6 His Truth transcends the Sky, In Heav'n his Mercies dwell; Deep as the Sea his Judgments lie, His Anger burns to Hell. 7 How excellent his Love, Whence all our Safety springs! O never let my Soul remove From underneath his Wings. Scripture: Psalm 36:1-7

With Joy we meditate the Grace

Appears in 423 hymnals Topics: Christ''s Compassion to the Afflicted Lyrics: 1 With Joy we meditate the Grace Of our High-Priest above, His Heart is made of Tenderness, His Bowels melt with Love. 2 Touch'd with a Sympathy within, He knows our feeble Frame; He knows what sore Temptations mean, For he hath felt the same. 3 But spotless, innocent and pure, The great Redeemer stood, While Satan's fiery Darts he bore, And did resist to Blood. 4 He in the Days of feeble Flesh Pour'd out his Cries and Tears, And in his Measure feels afresh What ev'ry Member bears. 5 He'll never quench the smoaking Flax, But raise it to a Flame; The bruised Reed he never breaks, Nor scorns the meanest Name. 6 Then let our humble Faith address His Mercy and his Pow'r; We shall obtain deliv'ring Grace In the distressing Hour. Scripture: Hebrews 4:15-16
