Abide with me

Author: Henry Francis Lyte, 1793-1847 Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1,732 hymnals Topics: Canticles and Scripture Paraphrases First Line: Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide (Reste avec moi! C'est l'heure le jour baisse) Lyrics: 1 Abide with me! fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide: when other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, oh abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see: O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, oh abide with me. 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight and tears no bitterness: Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Scripture: Psalm 10:14 Used With Tune: EVENTIDE

O pour the vital torrent down, Thy people's joy, their Lord's renown. 3 Scarce half alive we sigh and cry; Scarce raise to thee our languid eye; Kind Savior let our dying state Compassion in thy heart create. 4 The shepherd's blood the sheep must heal; O may we all its influence feel 'Till inward deep experience show, Christ can begin a heav'n below. Adoption

Author: Cruttenden Appears in 35 hymnals Topics: Scripture Doctrines and Blessings Adoption First Line: Let others boast their ancient line Lyrics: 1 Let others boast their ancient line In long succession great; In the proud list let heroes shine, And monarchs swell the state; Descended from the King of Kings, Each saint a nobler title sings. 2 Pronounce me, gracious God, thy son, Own me an heir divine; I'll pity princes on the throne, When I can call thee mine; Scepters and crowns unenvied rise, And lose their lustre in mine eyes. 3 Content, obscure I pass my days, To all I meet unknown, And wait till thou thy child shalt raise, And seat menear thy throne. No name, no honors here I crave, Well pleas'd with those beyond the grave. 4 Jesus, my elder brother, lives, With him I too shall reign; Nor sin, nor death, while he survives, Shall make the promise vain. In him my title stands secure, And shall, while endless years endure. 5 When he, in robes divinely bright, Shall once again appear, Thou, too my soul, shalt shine in light, And his full image bear. Enough!—I wait th' appointed day, Bless'd Savior, haste, and come away! Scripture: 1 John 3:1-3

Afar in Old Judea

Author: Roy A. Cheville, 1897-1986 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Scripture Lyrics: 1 Afar in old Judea, above the Jordan stream, a heav'nly light descended on a baptismal scene. Then came the confirmation of Jesus, from above, the sacramental signet; the Spirit as a dove. 2 In ancient Zarahemla, above the temple towers, appeared the Christ of Judah to crown the watchful hours. A voice, serene yet piercing beyond our words to tell, proclaimed him as the Savior whom prophets did foretell. 3 Then in a time of searching, a youth who sought God's way saw in Palmyra's woodland a light beyond his day, and when the vision opened to him whose sight was dim, he heard the Father saying, "This is my Son, hear him!" 4 Today the heav'ns are open to souls prepared to hear the wondrous revelation of Christ, who's ever near. The Savior of the ages still lives with us today; he seeks to help us know him and leads us in his way. Scripture: Matthew 3:16-17 Used With Tune: EWING
