Frank von Christierson

1900 - 1996 Person Name: Frank von Christierson, 1900-1996 Author of "As Saints of Old Their First-fruits Brought" in Worship and Rejoice Frank von Christierson (1900-1996) was born near Helsinki, Finland. He attended San Jose (California) High School, Stanford University (BA, Psychology, 1923), and San Francisco Theological Seminary (BD 1929). In 1983 he was awarded the citation of distinguished alumnus, and became a Fellow of The Hymn Society. He has served as youth director at First Presbyterian Church, San Luis Obispo, and pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Citrus Heights, California. He has published a hymnal collection entitled Make a Joyful Noise (1987) and is represented in many hymnals. Three of his hymn texts have been included in the new Hope hymnal Worship & Rejoice (2001). http://www.hopepublishing.com/html ========================= After serving for thirty-seven years as a minister of the United Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, North Hollywood and Sacramento, California, Rev. Frank con Christierson has retired to serve as "Interim minister" in the Central Area of the Synod of California. He has been moderator of San Francisco Presbytery and of Los Angeles Presbytery, and has just completed three years as chairman of radio and television for the Sacramento Area Council of Churches. Born in Finland, he was brought to America as a boy of four. He is a graduate of Stanford University and of San Francisco Theological Seminary. Composer of "FOREST GREEN" in The Cyber Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Carl P. Daw Jr.

b. 1944 Person Name: Carl P. Daw, Jr., b. 1944 Author of "Blessed Be the God of Israel" in Psalms for All Seasons Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. Louisville, KY, 1944) is the son of a Baptist minister. He holds a PhD degree in English (University of Virginia) and taught English from 1970-1979 at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. As an Episcopal priest (MDiv, 1981, University of the South, Sewanee, Tennesee) he served several congregations in Virginia, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. From 1996-2009 he served as the Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Carl Daw began to write hymns as a consultant member of the Text committee for The Hymnal 1982, and his many texts often appeared first in several small collections, including A Year of Grace: Hymns for the Church Year (1990); To Sing God’s Praise (1992), New Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1996), Gathered for Worship (2006). Other publications include A Hymntune Psalter (2 volumes, 1988-1989) and Breaking the Word: Essays on the Liturgical Dimensions of Preaching (1994, for which he served as editor and contributed two essays. In 2002 a collection of 25 of his hymns in Japanese was published by the United Church of Christ in Japan. 1878 - 1939 Author of "All beautiful the march of days" in The Hymnal Wile, Mrs. Frances Whitmarsh. (Bristol Centre, New York, December 2, 1878--July 31, 1939, Rochester, N.Y.). Married A.J. Wile in 1901. Her lovely hymn for use in winter, beginning "All beautiful the march of days" was written about 1907 while she was a parishioner of Rev. William C.
