The Good Fight

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Encamped along the hills of light Lyrics: 1 Encamped along the hills of light, Ye Christian soldiers, rise And press the battle ere the night Shall veil the glowing skies. Salvation's helmet on each head, With truth all girt about, The earth shall tremble 'neath our tread And echo with our shout. 2 Our Lord sees every Christian die, And feels each dying breath, And calls out from a field nearby, "Be faithful unto death." Our brethren, dead beneath the plain, Whose spirits never died, Rise up to march and shout again, "O Christ, be glorified!" 3 Must I be carried to the skies On flow'ry beds of ease, While others fought to win the prize And sailed thru bloody seas? Sure I must fight if I would reign; Increase my courage, Lord. I'll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by Thy word. Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD-COUNTY DOWN

I Feel the Winds of God Today

Author: Jessie Adams Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 27 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I feel the winds of God today; Today my sail I lift, Though heavy, oft with drenching spray, And torn with many a rift; If hope but light the water’s crest, And Christ my bark will use, I’ll seek the seas at His behest, And brave another cruise. 2 It is the wind of God that dries My vain, regretful tears, Until with braver thoughts shall rise The purer, brighter years; If cast on shores of selfish ease Or pleasure I should be, Lord, let me feel Thy freshening breeze, And I’ll put back to sea. 3 If ever I forget Thy love And how that love was shown, Lift high the blood red flag above; It bears Thy name alone. Great Pilot of my onward way, Thou wilt not let me drift; I feel the winds of Go Amen. 'Twas in the Watches of the Night

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 62 hymnals Lyrics: 1. ’Twas in the watches of the night I thought upon Thy power, I kept Thy lovely face in sight amidst the darkest hour. My flesh lay resting on my bed, my soul arose on high: My God, my life my hope, I said, bring Thy salvation nigh. 2. My spirit labors up Thine hill, and climbs the heav’nly road; But Thy right hand upholds me still, while I pursue my God. Thy mercy stretches o’er my head the shadow of Thy wings; My heart rejoices in Thine aid, my tongue awakes and sings. 3. But the destroyers of my peace shall fret and rage in vain; The tempter shall for ever cease, and all my sins be slain. Thy sword shall give my foes to death, and send them down to dwell, In the dark caverns of the earth, or to the depths of hell. Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

Save Me, O God

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 38 hymnals First Line: Save me, O God, the swelling floods Lyrics: 1 Save me, O God, the swelling floods break in upon my soul; I sink, and sorrows o'er my head like mighty waters roll. I cry till all my voice be gone; in tears I waste the day: my God, behold my longing eyes, and shorten Thy delay. 2 They hate my soul without a cause, and still their number grows more than the hairs around my head, and mighty are my foes. 'Twas then I paid that dreadful debt that men could never pay, and gave those honors to Thy law which sinners took away. 3 Thus in the great Messiah's name the royal prophet mourns; thus He awakes our hearts to grief, and gives us joy by turns. Now shall the saints rejoice, and find salvation in Thy name for I have borne their heavy load of sorrow, pain, and shame. 4 Grief, like a garment, clothed me round, and sackcloth was my dress, while I procured for naked souls a robe of righteousness. Amongst my brethren and the Jews I like a stranger stood, and bore their vile reproach to bring the Gentiles near to God. 5 I came in sinful mortals' stead to do my Father's will; yet when I cleansed my Father's house, they scandalized my zeal. My fasting, and my holy groans were made the drunkard's song; but God from His celestial throne heard my complaining tongue. 6 He saved me from the dreadful deep, nor let my soul be drowned; He raised and fixed my sinking feet on well established ground. 'Twas in a most accepted hour my prayer arose on high, and for my sake my God shall hear the dying sinner's cry. Topics: Supplication Scripture: Psalm 69 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

My God, I Love Thee

Author: Francis Xavier, 16th cent.; Edward Caswall Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 211 hymnals First Line: My God, I love Thee, not because Lyrics: 1 My God, I love Thee; not because I hope for heav'n thereby, nor yet for fear that loving not I might forever die; but for that Thou didst all mankind upon the cross embrace; for us didst bear the nails and spear, and manifold disgrace; 2 And griefs and torments numberless, and sweat of agony; e'en death itself, and all for man, who was Thine enemy. Then why, most loving Jesus Christ, should I not love Thee well? Not for the sake of winning heav'n, nor any fear of hell; 3 Not with the hope of gaining aught, nor seeking a reward, but as Thyself hast loved me, O ever loving Lord! E'en so I love Thee, and will love, and in Thy praise will sing, solely because Thou art my God and my eternal King! Topics: Salvation Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 154 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Come, let us use the grace divine, and all with one accord, in a perpetual covenant join ourselves to Christ the Lord; Give up ourselves, thru Jesus' power, his name to glorify; and promise, in this sacred hour, for God to live and die. 2. The covenant we this moment make be ever kept in mind; we will no more our God forsake, or cast these words behind. We never will throw off the fear of God who hears our vow; and if thou art well pleased to hear, come down and meet us now. 3. Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, let all our hearts receive, present with thy celestial host the peaceful answer give; to each covenant the blood apply which takes our sins away, and register our names on high and keep us to that day!
