William Edwin Entzminger

1859 - 1930 Port. of "Mestre, o Mar Se Revolta" in Hinário para o Culto Cristão William Edwin Entzminger was born in South Carolina in 1859. He earned a B.S. from Furman University in South Carolina and then went to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY for a Doctor of Theology degree. He married Maggie Grace Griffith, and together they became Baptist missionaries in Brazil in 1891. He wrote and translated many hymns. ================= Born: December 25, 1859, South Carolina. Died: January 11, 1930, Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Buried: Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Entzminger studied at Furman University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. In 1891, he and his wife went to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, where he worked as a missionary the rest of his life. E. A. Hoffman

1839 - 1929 Composer of "[Lleno de angustia y temores]" in Himnos Selectos Evangelicos Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929) after graduating from Union Seminary in Pennsylvania was ordained in 1868. As a minister he was appointed to the circuit in Napoleon, Ohio in 1872. He worked with the Evangelical Association's publishing arm in Cleveland for eleven years. He served in many chapels and churches in Cleveland and in Grafton in the 1880s, among them Bethel Home for Sailors and Seamen, Chestnut Ridge Union Chapel, Grace Congregational Church and Rockport Congregational Church. In his lifetime he wrote more than 2,000 gospel songs including"Leaning on the everlasting arms" (1894). The fifty song books he edited include Pentecostal Hymns No. 1 and The Evergreen, 1873. Gwendolyn Cooper Lightner

1925 - 1999 Person Name: Gwedolyn Cooper Lightner Alterer of "Peace, Be Still" in Hymns and Devotions for Daily Worship (African American Edition) Gwendolyn Cooper Lightner (b 28 June 1925, Brookport, IL | d 22 August 1999, Los Angeles, CA) was an important figure in the development of gospel music on the West Coast. Lightner studied music at Southern Illinois University and the Lyon and Healy Academy of Music. She moved to Los Angeles and formed the Echoes of Eden Choir (1946) at St. Paul Baptist Church with J. Earle Hines. In 1957, she and Thurston Frazier organized a community choir called the Voices of Hope. Lightner accompanied many gospel singers, including Mahalia Jackson. It was her arrangement of “Peace Be Still,” completed while music minister at Bethany Baptist Church, that James Cleveland used on his groundbreaking recording with the Angelic Choir (1963).
