Karl P. Harrington

1861 - 1953 Hymnal Number: 165 Composer of "[There's a song in the air!]" in Epworth Praises Born: June 13, 1861, Somersworth, New Hampshire. Died: November 14, 1953, Berkeley, California. Buried: Middletown, Connecticut. Son of Calvin S. and Eliza Chase Harrington, Karl earned his AB degree in 1882, and his AM in 1885, from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He studied at the University of Berlin (1887-89) and Yale University (1890-91). He taught high school in Westfield, Massachusetts (1882-85); Latin at Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham, Massachusetts (1885-87); was a Latin tutor at Wesleyan University (1889-91); Latin professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1891-99); University of Maine (1899-1905); and Wesleyan University (1905). While at the University of North Carolina, he directed the Glee Club. 1840 - 1914 Hymnal Number: 172 Composer of "[Jesus, my Savior, to Bethlehem came]" in Epworth Praises Emerson Eaton Hasty USA 1840-1914. Born in ME, his family moved to OH when he was three. He was a beekeeper most of his life. He married Annette (Nettie) Wilson, and they had five children: William, Nettie, Arthur, Elliott, and Julia. He translated Georgia’s 4th Georgic. He also wrote gospel songs. Other written works include: “What is Christianity?” and “Reasons for not joining church societies”. He also submitted articles to a newsletter on beekeeping. Carrie E. Rounsefell

1861 - 1930 Hymnal Number: 132 Composer of "[It may not be on the mountain's height]" in Epworth Praises Carrie Esther Parker Rounsefell USA 1862-1930. Born at Merrimack, NH, she grew up in Manchester, NH. She married William Rounsefell, a bookkeeper. She was known as a singing evangelist throughout New England and New York, where she toured with a small autoharp (zither). She died at Durham, ME. John Perry

Josiah G. Holland

1819 - 1881 Hymnal Number: 165 Author of "There's a Song in the Air" in Epworth Praises Holland, Josiah Gilbert, was born at Belchertown, Massachusetts, July 24, 1819. He was for some time on the staff of the Springfield Republican, and became in 1870 the editor of Scribner's Magazine. He has written several successful books, and some poetical pieces. One of the latter, "For summer's bloom, and autumn's blight" (Praise in and through all things), was included, from Bitter Sweet, 1858, in the Boston Unitarian Hymn [and Tune] Book for the Church & Home, 1868. W. Stillman Martin

1862 - 1935 Person Name: Stillman Martin Hymnal Number: 22 Composer of "[O what a wonderful Savior is Jesus]" in Epworth Praises Born: March 8, 1862, Rowley, Massachusetts. Died: December 16, 1935, Atlanta, Georgia. Buried: Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia. Husband of hymnist Civilla Martin, Stillman attended Harvard University and was ordained a Baptist minister, though he later switched to the Disciples of Christ denomination. In 1916, he became a professor of Bible studies at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina. Three years later, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Edward Husband

1843 - 1908 Person Name: E. Husband Hymnal Number: 145 Composer of "[O Jesus, Thou art standing]" in Epworth Praises Husband, Edward was educated at St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he was successively Curate of Atherstone and Folkestone; and in 1878 Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Folkestone. In 1874 Mr. Husband published The Mission Hymnal, in which appeared his hymns as follows:— 1. Alas! poor world, I loved thee long. Rest in Jesus. 2. And dost Thou ask me, dearest Lord. Christ's Invitation, " Follow Me." 3. I must have Jesus only. Jesus only desired 4. Sweet Blood, dear ransom of our souls. The Blood of Jesus.
