God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens

Author: Catherine Cameron Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 46 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God, who stretched the spangled heavens, infinite in time and place, flung the suns in burning radiance through the silent fields of space; we, your children in your likeness, share inventive pow’rs with you. Great creator still creating, show us what we yet may do. 2 We have ventured worlds undreamed of since the childhood of our race, known the ecstasy of winging through untraveled realms of space, probed the secrets of the atom, yielding unimagined pow’r, facing us with life’s destruction or our most triumphant hour. 3 As each far horizon beckons, may it challenge us anew, children of creative purpose serving others, hon’ring you. May our dreams prove rich with promise, each endeavor well begun. Great creator, give us guidance till our goals and yours are one. Topics: Creation God as Creator; God Power of; God Works of; Praying; Science and Technology; Vocation Scripture: Genesis 1:1-19 Used With Tune: HOLY MANNA Text Sources: Contemporary Worship I, 1969, alt.

There no foes nor storms assail me, while within the cleft I hide. Refrain: Now I’m resting, sweetly resting, in the cleft once made for me. Jesus, blessed Rock of ages, I will hide myself in thee. 2 Long pursued by sin and Satan, weary, sad, I longed for rest. Then I found this heav’nly shelter, opened in my Savior’s breast. [Refrain] 3 Peace which passeth understanding, joy the world can never give, now in Jesus, I am finding; in his smiles of love I live. [Refrain] 4 In the rifted Rock I’ll hide me, till the storms of life are past, all secure in this blest refuge, heeding not the fiercest blast. Sometimes a Light Surprises

Author: William Cowper Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 409 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Sometimes a light surprises the child of God who sings: the light of one who rises with gentle, healing wings. When comforts are declining, God grants the soul again a season of clear shining, to cheer it after rain. 2 In holy contemplation with joy we shall pursue the theme of God’s salvation, and find it ever new. Set free from present sorrow we cheerfully can say, let the unknown tomorrow bring with it what it may. 3 It can bring with it nothing but God will bear us through. Who gives the lilies clothing will clothe the people, too. Beneath the spreading heavens no creature but is fed: the one who feeds the ravens will give the children bread. 4 Though vine and fig tree neither their yearly fruit should bear, though all the fields should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there, yet God, the same abiding, through praise shall tune my voice, for while in love confiding I cannot but rejoice. Topics: Assurance of Grace; Courage; Faith; God Faithfulness of; Healing Scripture: Psalm 30:4-5 Used With Tune: SALLY GARDENS Text Sources: Olney Hymns, Book III, 1779, alt.

Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain

Author: John of Damascus; John M. Neale Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 381 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness! God hath brought forth Israel into joy from sadness, loosed from Pharaoh’s bitter yoke Jacob’s sons and daughters, led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters. 2 ’Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison, and from three days’ sleep in death as a sun hath risen. Now rejoice, Jerusalem, and with true affection welcome in unwearied strains Jesus’ resurrection. 3 Neither shall the gates of death, nor the tomb’s dark portal, nor the watchers, nor the seal hold thee as a mortal. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

Author: Gerard Moultrie Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 181 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand. Ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descending comes, our homage to demand. 2 King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of heaven now incarnate in the body and the blood, he will give to all the faithful his own self for heav’nly food. 3 Rank on rank the host of heaven streams before him on the way, as the Light of light descending from the realms of endless day comes, that pow’rs of hell may vanish, as the shadows pass away. 4 At his feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the Presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, “Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia, Lord Most High!” Topics: Angels; Angels; Blood of Christ; Body of Christ; Communion; Heritage Before 1500; Incarnation; Jesus Christ Birth of; Jesus Christ Second Coming of; Praise; Reign of Christ; Silence Scripture: Isaiah 6:1-10 Used With Tune: PICARDY Text Sources: from the Greek "Σιγησάτω πᾶσα σάρξ βροτεία," Liturgy of St. James of Jerusalem (Mediterranean), 5th c.; trans.
