O Lord, How Shall I Meet You

Author: Paul Gerhardt Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 47 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:40 Lyrics: 1 O Lord, how shall I meet you, how welcome you aright? Your people long to greet you, my hope, my heart's delight! O kindle, Lord Most Holy, your lamp within my breast to do in spirit lowly all that may please you best. 2 Love caused your incarnation, love brought you down to me; your thirst for my salvation procured my liberty. O love beyond all telling, that led you to embrace, in love all love excelling, our lost and fallen race! 3 Rejoice, then, you sad-hearted, who sit in deepest gloom, who mourn o'er joys departed and tremble at your doom. Despair not, he is near you, yea, standing at the door, who best can help and cheer you and bids you weep no more. 4 Sin's debt, that fearful burden, let not your souls distress; your guilt the Lord will pardon and cover by his grace. He comes, for men procuring the peace of sin forgiv'n, for all God's sons securing their heritage in heav'n. 5 You come, O Lord, with gladness, in mercy and goodwill, to bring an end to sadness and bid our fears be still. In patient expectation we live for that great day when a renewed creation your glory shall display. Author: Oliver Appears in 45 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:31-46 Lyrics: 1 Lo! he comes, with clouds descending, Once for favored sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints, attending, Swell the triumph of his train: Hallelujah! Jesus shall for ever reign. 2 Every eye shall now behold him Robed in dreadful majesty: Those who set at naught and sold him, Pierced, and nailed him to the tree, Deeply wailing, Shall the true Messiah see. 3 When the solemn trump has sounded, Heaven and earth shall flee away; All who hate him must, confounded, Hear the summons of that day-- Come to judgment! Come to judgment--come away! 4 Now the Saviour, long expected, See, in solemn pomp, appear; All his saints, by man rejected, Now shall meet him in the air: Hallelujah! See the day of God appear. The Lord Our God Alone Is Strong

Author: Caleb T. Winchester Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 44 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:40 Lyrics: 1 The Lord our God alone is strong; His hands build not for one brief day; His wondrous works, thro' ages long, His wisdom and His power display. 2 His mountains lift their solemn forms To watch in silence o’er the land; The rolling ocean, rocked with storms, Sleeps in the hollow of His hand. 3 Thou sovereign God, receive this gift Thy willing servants offer Thee; Accept the prayers that thousands lift, And let these halls Thy temple be. 4 And let those learn who here shall meet, True wisdom is with reverence crowned, And science walks with humble feet To seek the God that faith hath found. Amen. Used With Tune: MELCOMBE

We Thank Thee, Lord

Author: Calvin W. Laufer Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 31 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:40 First Line: We thank Thee, Lord, Thy paths of service lead Lyrics: 1 We thank Thee, Lord, Thy paths of service lead To blazoned heights and down the slopes of need; They reach Thy throne, encompass land and sea, And he who journeys in them walks with Thee. 2 We've sought and found Thee in the secret place And marveled at the radiance of Thy face; But often in some far-off Galilee Beheld Thee fairer yet while serving Thee. 3 We've felt Thy touch in sorrow's darkened way Abound with love and solace for the day; And, 'neath the burdens there, Thy sovereignty Has held our hearts enthralled while serving Thee. 4 We've seen Thy glory like a mantle spread O'er hill and dale in saffron flame and red; But in the eyes of men, redeemed and free, A splendor greater yet while serving Thee. Amen. Topics: Christ Beauty; Christ Presence; Christ Sympathy; Discipleship; Life in Christ Discipleship and Service Used With Tune: FIELD

As Saints of Old

Author: Frank von Christierson (1900-1996) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:31-46 First Line: As saints of old their first fruits broght Lyrics: 1 As saints of old their first fruits brought of orchard, flock, and field to God, the giver of all good, the source of bounteous yield; so we today first fruits would bring: the wealth of this good land, of farm and market, shop and home, of mind, and heart, and hand. 2 A world in need now summons us to labour, love, and give; to make our life an offering that others too may live. The church of Christ is calling us to make the dream come true: a world redeemed, your kingdom come, all life in Christ made new. 3 In gratitude and humble trust we bring our best today, to serve your cause and share your love with all humanity. O God, who gave yourself to us in Jesus Christ your Son, help us to give ourselves each day until life's work is done. Topics: Discipleship; Justice; Harvest Thanksgiving Used With Tune: TYROL
