Katherine A. Grimes

1877 - 1967 Scripture: Psalm 27:11 Author of "Teach Me Thy Will, O Lord" in Hymns of Faith Born: April 26, 1877, Argentine, Michigan. Died: September 3, 1967, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Buried: Calvary Cemetery, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Grimes was the first child of Stephen and Ada Potter Atherton, and had seven brothers. In 1900, she married broom maker Elliot Grant Grimes in Vernon, Michigan. She had a stepdaughter, Corabelle Grimes Shorden, one son, Leon Elliot Grimes, and an adopted daughter, Mary Patricia Green Jacobs. She became a writer at an early age, and worked as an editor for the Southern Agriculturist magazine in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to writing, she was an accomplished pianist and a music teacher. In 1920, she and her son Leon worked for Dr. William Fewkes of the Smithsonian Institute, exploring the Anasazi Indian ruins at Mesa Verde, Colorado. William M. Runyan

1870 - 1957 Scripture: Psalm 27:11 Composer of "[Teach me Thy will, O Lord, teach me Thy way]" in Hymns of Faith Showing early musical promise, William Marion Runyan (b. Marion, NY, 1870; d. Pittsburg, KS, 1957) was a substitute church organist by the age of twelve. He became a Methodist minister in 1891 and served several churches in Kansas but turned to evangelism in 1903; he worked for the Central Methodist Conference for the next twenty years. Following that service, Runyan became pastor at the Federated Church at John Brown University, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. Editor of Christian Workers Magazine, he also served the Moody Bible Institute and was an editor for Hope Publishing Company until his retirement in 1948. Evelyn Simpson-Curenton

b. 1953 Person Name: Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, b. 1953 Scripture: Psalm 27:10 Arranger of "[I'm so glad Jesus lifted me]" in African American Heritage Hymnal Evelyn Simpson Curenton (born 1953) is a leading African-American composer, pianist, organist, and vocalist. Simpson Curenton began piano lessons at age 5, began to perform with the Singing Simpsons of Philadelphia, a family group, and earned a B.M., Music Education and Voice from Temple University. She has been commissioned to write works for the American Guild of Organists, George Shirley, the late Duke Ellington, and her sister, the late Joy Simpson, arranged music for Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman, and the Porgy and Bess Chorus of the New York Metropolitan Opera, and has performed with musical organizations such as Philadelphia's National Opera Ebony (later renamed Opera North). Based in the Washington, D.C., area, Curenton is Music Director of the Washington Performing Arts Society's Men and Women of the Gospel and an associate of the Smithsonian Institution. Healey Willan

1880 - 1968 Scripture: Psalm 27 Arranger (Faux Bourdon) of "ST. MAGNUS" in The Hymnary of the United Church of Canada Healey Willan (b. Balham, London, England, October 12, 1880; d. Toronto, Ontario, February 16, 1968), theory teacher, composer and organist, was born into an Anglo-Catholic family in England and served several churches in the London area, becoming known especially for his adaptations of Gregorian chant to be able to be sung in English translation. In 1913 he moved to Canada where he led the theory department and was organist at the Toronto Conservatory of Music. He also was organist at St. Paul’s, Canada’s largest Anglican church, and after 1921 at the smaller Church of St. Mary Magdalene. By invitation, he composed an anthem for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a singular honor for one not residing in England. Emily Brink

John Goss

1800 - 1880 Person Name: John Goss, 1800-1880 Scripture: Psalm 27:1-6 Composer of "ARTHUR'S SEAT" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) John Goss (b. Fareham, Hampshire, England, 1800; d. London, England, 1880). As a boy Goss was a chorister at the Chapel Royal and later sang in the opera chorus of the Covent Garden Theater. He was a professor of music at the Royal Academy of Music (1827-1874) and organist of St. Paul Cathedral, London (1838-1872); in both positions he exerted significant influence on the reform of British cathedral music. Goss published Parochial Psalmody (1826) and Chants, Ancient and Modern (1841); he edited William Mercer's Church Psalter and Hymn Book (1854). 1834 - 1900 Person Name: Uzziah C. Burnap Scripture: Psalm 27:1-6 Arranger of "ARTHUR'S SEAT" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Burnap ran a dry goods business in Brooklyn, though he graduated from the University of Paris with a music degree, and for 37 years played the organ at the Reformed Church in Brooklyn Heights. He was a prolific composer, and helped edit the following: Hymns of the Church, 1869 Hymns of Prayer and Praise, 1871 Hymns and Songs of Praise, 1874 --The Cyber Hymnal™ There is uncertainty about his middle name. Reynolds and the Library of Congress say it was Christopher. A contemporary obituary relied on by "The Cyber Hymnal™" says it was Cicero. It appears that there was another Uzziah C[icero] Burnap who lived (per LOC) 1794-1854.

Graham Kendrick

b. 1950 Person Name: Graham Kendrick, 1950- Scripture: Psalm 27:4 Author of "Knowing You" in Worship and Rejoice Graham Kendrick (b. England, August 2, 1950), the son of a Baptist minister in Northamptonshire, is one of the most prolific Christian singer-songwriters in the United Kingdom. He’s written music for over thirty years, and to date has released thirty-eight albums. He is best known for his songs “Shine, Jesus, Shine,” “Knowing You,” and “The Servant King.” Kendrick has received honorary doctorates in divinity from Brunel University and Wycliffe College. In 1987 he helped co-found the March for Jesus, which today is a global phenomenon in which Christians take their faith to the streets in a celebration of Christ. In 1995 Kendrick received a Dove Award for his international work, and he remains an active advocate for Compassion International, which is a Christian child sponsorship organization dedicated to the long-term development of children living in poverty around the world, and also is a contributor to CompassionArt, an organization with the aim of generating income from works of art to assist in the relief of suffering around the planet.
