Oscar Ahnfelt

1813 - 1882 Person Name: O. Ahnfelt Hymnal Number: 32 Composer of "[Jesus, lad din bange due]" in Evangeli harpe Oscar Ahnfelt (1813 -1882) was a Swedish singer and composer. He wrote the music for many of Lina Sandell’s hymns. A pietist, he raised some concern in the State-church, but his music was apparently so popular, King Karl XV gave him permission to play and sing in both of his kingdoms. Ahnfelt’s music has spread throughout the world; two of his best-known songs are “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “Day by Day.” Laura de Jong

J. B. Atchinson

1840 - 1882 Hymnal Number: 275 Author of "Under Naadevingens Ly" in Evangeli harpe Atchinson, Jonathan Bush, born at Wilson, New York, Feb. 17, 1840, and "licensed as a Methodist Preacher," Sept. 6, 1874. Of his hymns the following are the best known:— 1. Behold the stone is rolled away. [Easter.] This was Mr. Atchinson's first hymn. It appeared in the Sunday School Times, Dec. 1874. It is not in use in Great Britain. 2. Fully persuaded, Lord, I believe. [Faith.] Written in 1874 or 1875, and first published in Gospel Hymns, No. 1. It is given in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, No. 149, with music by W. F. Sherwin. 3. I have read of a beautiful city. [Heaven.] Written about the same time as the former, and published in Gospel Hymns. It is given in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, No. 403, with music by O. F. Presbrey. 4. O crown of rejoicing that's waiting for me. [The Reward .] This hymn is also in I. D. George Nelson Allen

1812 - 1877 Person Name: Geo. N. Allen Hymnal Number: 218 Composer of "[Syng høit, min sjæl, om Jesu død!]" in Evangeli harpe George Nelson Allen (1812-1871), studied at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Oh OH and with Lowell Mason in Boston. Allen gave a strong musical foundation to Oberlin College in its earliest years; in addition to being Professor of Music he also served as Professor of Geology and Natural History, Secretary and Treasurer. In 1835 he compiled The Oberlin Social and Sabbath Hymn Book, in which appeared his most well known tune MAITLAND (also known as CROSS AND CROWN or WESTERN MELODY) with the text "Must Jesus bear the cross alone?". This was adapted by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1938 for his hymn "Precious Lord, take my hand". hand." He composed anthems and wrote some additional music for Isaac Woodbury's Oratorio "Absalom." W. M'K Darwood

1835 - 1914 Person Name: W. M'K. Darwood Hymnal Number: 399 Author of "Paa Golgata" in Evangeli harpe Rv William McKendree Darwood DD United Kingdom 1835-1914. Born at Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, he emigrated with his parents at age 13 to the U.S. and resided in IN, where he received education, often getting up at 4 a.m. to study. This resulted in him completing studies in about two years. Converted at 19, he eventually pastored at Methodist Episcopal churches in the Northwest IN Conference in 1869, From the Asbury Church, Terre Haute, IN, he moved to NY in 1880 to pastor St. Paul's Church, Peekskill, NY,, after which he went to Old Bedford St. Church, New York City and pastored there, He held other pastorates around the city, including the Washington Heights Church in Yonkers and the 18th Street Church. He received a DD degree from Baker University in1887. In 1904 he requested a transfer to Katonal, NY to pastor there. After several years he retired, having pastored for 21 years. During this time he held about 145 weeks of revival services, from which more than a 1000 souls were converted and added to the church. In his prime, he was in great demand to speak at camp meetings. He probably preached in more NYC churches than any other minister, having visited nearly all the Manhattan Island churches as well. He wrote several hymn lyrics. He died at Little River, CT. F. F. Flemming

1778 - 1813 Hymnal Number: 52 Composer of "[Hellige fader, hør mig, naar jeg beder]" in Evangeli harpe Friedrich Ferdinand Flemming Germany 1778-1813. Born in Neuhausen, Erzgebirge, Germany, he studied medicine at Wittenberg, 1796-1800, Jena, Vienna, and Trieste. He practiced as a physician in Berlin until his death, but, musically, is remembered for his setting of Horace's ode beginning “Integer Vitae”, from which the tune “Flemming” is adapted. He was active in musical circles and composed many songs for a male vocal ensemble, “Liedertafel”. He died in Berlin. John Perry

Annie Herbert

1844 - 1932 Hymnal Number: 357 Author of "Vi hverandre kjender der" in Evangeli harpe Annie Elvira Hubbart (Herbert) Barker USA 1844-1932. Born in Leon, NY, she received some education at Randolph Academy in her home county. She later taught there herself. Gospel songs were becoming popular in evangelistic services in the 19th century. She became a successful public recitalist, studying at the Buffalo School of Oratory and with Anna Randall Diehl of New York and Professor Leonard of Boston. After marrying in 1879, she moved to Montana with her husband, from that area. Along with other pioneers. She claimed those years as the best of her life. In 1888 they moved again to San Rafael, CA, he being an invalid at that time. She lived there the rest of her life. John Perry

Wilhelm Andreas Wexels

1797 - 1866 Person Name: W. A. Wexels Hymnal Number: 509 Author of "O tænk, naar engang samles skal" in Evangeli harpe Wexels, Wilhelm Andreas. (Copenhagen, Denmark, March 29, 1797--May 14, 1866, Oslo, Norway). Lutheran. After studies in Copenhagen and Christiana (Oslo), became catechist and curate of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Christiana. Preached against the inroads of rationalism, emphasizing the need for spiritual revival. Church historians claim that his ministry was the turning point in the Church of Norway. Failed in his attempt to give Norway a hymnal, but many of his hymns survived. --J. Irving Erickson, DNAH Archives
