b. 1938 Person Name: David Mowbray, 1938- Topics: Divine Inspiration Author of "Come to us, creative Spirit" in Together in Song David Mowbray (b. 1938) was born in Wallington, Surrey, England. He attended Dulwich College, Fitzwilliam, Cambridge where he read English. He gained an MA at Trinity in Bristol and a BD at London (External). Ordained in the Church of England, he was a curate at St. Giles in Northampton and at St. Mary's in Walford. Appointed Vicar of Broxborne, Herts in 1970 in 1984, he became Vicar of All Saints, Hertfordshire. In 1991 he became Vicar of St. Matthew's Darley Abbey, Derby, where he serves to this day. He has been writing hymns since 1977 and most of his texts are represented by Jubilate Hymns. Three of his hymn texts have been included in Hope's new hymnal Worship & Rejoice (2001). --www.hopepublishing.com

Henry Montagu Butler

1833 - 1918 Person Name: H. Montagu Butler, *1833-1918 Topics: Prayer and Inspiration Author of "Lift up your hearts!" in The Beacon Song and Service book Butler, Henry Montagu, D.D., was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. as Senior Classic in 1855, and became a Fellow of his college in 1855. Taking Holy Orders in 1859, he became Head Master of Harrow School in 1859. This position he held until 1885, when he was preferred to the Deanery of Gloucester. He held the deanery for a short time only, and became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, on the death of Dr. W. H. Thompson in 1886. Dr. Butler has also held the important appointments of Hon. Chaplain to the Queen; Examining Chaplain to Archbishops Tait and Benson; Select Preacher at Oxford, 1882; and Preb. of Holborn in St. Paul's Cathedral. Dr. Butler edited the 3rd edition of Hymns for the Chapel of Harrow School, 1865, and the 4th edition, 1881. To the Harrow Hymn Book Dr. Butler contributed:— 1. Art thou the Healer that should come. St. John Baptist. 2. Ask and ye surely shall receive. Prayer. Last St. by J. Montgomery. 3. Jesus died for us and rose again. Death and Burial. 4. Lovest thou Me ? the risen Saviour cried. St. Peter. 5. 0 merciful and holy. Founder's Day. 6. Rejoice today with one accord. Founder's Day. 7. The night of agony hath passed. Good Friday. 8. Where shall we find our mightiest saint? St. Paul. Of these Nos. 2 and 3 were given in the 3rd edition of the Harrow Hymn Book, 1865, and the rest were added in 1881. Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 8 are also in Hymns for the Use of Sherborne School, 1888, Nos. 5 and 6 being much altered. Died: October 21, 1662, London, England. Buried: In the cloisters of Westminster Abbey, London, England. Lawes, tutor to the daughters of the Earl of Bridgewater, is best known as a composer. He became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1626, and a member of the "King’s Musick" in 1631. He wrote over 400 vocal pieces, as well as anthems and instrumental compositions. Thomas B. Southgate

1814 - 1868 Topics: Bible Inspired Composer of "BROOKFIELD" in The Psalter Southgate, Thomas Bishop, born at Hornsey, Middlesex, June 8, 1814; educated in the school of the Chapel Royal, where he was a chorister; studied harmony under Thomas Attwood and Sir John Goss, and the organ under Samuel Wesley; organist of Hornsey Church from 1834 to 1853, and of St Anne's, Highgate Rise, London, from the latter year until his death, which occured at Highgate, November 3, 1868. John Webster Grant

Served as a Navy chaplain during World War II; acted as editor-in-chief of Ryerson Press (Toronto), 1959-1963; taught church history at Pine Hill Divinity School (Halifax), 1948-1949; Union College (Vancouver), 1949-1957; in South India, 1958-1959; and at Emmanuel College (Toronto), 1963-?. He published many books and articles in his field of specialty, notably The church in the Canadian era (1972). Michael Hewlett
