Elizabeth Wilson

b. 1867 Author of "Father of lights, in whom there is no shadow" in The Hymnal Wilson, Elizabeth, L.L.D. (Neenah, Wisconsin, August 17, 1867--?). Daughter of a Methodist Episcopal minister, herself an ordained minister of the same denomination, a member (one-time officer) of the American Association of Women Preachers, and of the British Society for the Ministry of Women. She was educated at Lawrence University (now College), Appleton, Wisconsin; Oxford, England; Jena, Germany, and the Bengal Government Weaving Institute, Serampore, Inda. After teaching at Lawrence for five years, 1885-1889, she began her real life work with the Y.W.C.A. and continued in it for thirty-nine years, a part of the time being spent as as Association Secretary in Japan. Retiring from active work she lived for a time at Appleton and then removed to California where, in 1953 at the time of this writing, she makes her home in Los Angeles at Pacific Homes, a residence for retired religious workers. Elisabeth H. Burrowes

Used by permission. ============================ Elisabeth Burrowes is a resident of Berkeley, California, formerly of Englewood, New Jersey. She is the mother of five children, has a number of grandchildren, is the author of two books and numerous poems. Her hymn "God of the ages by whose hand", published by the Hymn Society of America in 1958, will appear in the forthcoming new edition of The Methodist Hymnal. Mrs. Burrowes, an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church, has recently affiliated with The South Berkeley Community Church, an inter-racial Church which is doing a deeply dedicated and inspiring work. Mrs. Burrowes wrote the Anniversary Hymn, "Almighty God, we pray thee still to guide us", for its celebration in 1964. Her married name is Mrs. Paul deNyse Burrowes. She is also the author of one of the Children's Hymns recently published by the Hymn Society entitled "Our Father, who dost lead us." --Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966. Used by permission.

Fenton J. A. Hort

1828 - 1892 Translator (from Latin) of "O Strength and Stay" in The Cyber Hymnal Hort, Fenton John Anthony, D.D., was born Apr. 23, 1828, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, B.A. in 1st class Classical Tripos, 1850, and also in the Moral Science Tripos and the Natural Science Tripos, 1851. He has held several distinguished appointments at his University, has published several learned works, was joint editor with Dr. Westcott of The New Testament in the Original Greek, and sat as one of the Revision Committee of the New Testament. Honor Mary Thwaites

1914 - 1993 Person Name: Honor Mary Thwaites (1914-1993) Translator of "Happy the Home That Welcomes You" in Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal Honor Mary Thwaites was born in Australia in 1914. She attended the University of Melbourne. She went to England in the 1930s and worked with a group from the Society of Friends assisting Jewish people and others to escape from Nazi Germany. She married the Australian poet and intelligence officer Michael Thwaites in 1939 and they returned to Australia. There she wrote several hymns that appear in Australian hymnbooks. N Naber, Hymnary

Helen Thoburn

1885 - 1932 Author of "Father of lights, in whom there is no shadow" in The Hymnal Thoburn, Helen. (Union City, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1885--February 3, 1932, New York City). One of a long line of Methodists engaged in religious work. After her graduation from Leland Stanford University she was appointed a secretary of the Y.W.C.A. to do editorial work in China where she spent eight years. Upon relinquishing this work she returned to the United States and undertook special responsibility for the international educational program of the Association. George MacLaren Brydon

1875 - 1963 Author of "O Lord and Savior" in Eleven Ecumenical Hymns Clergyman of the Protestant Episcopal Church; native Virginian, born in Danville, June 27, 1875. Received his B.A. degree from Roanoke College in 1896 and a D.D. from the same institution in 1928. A graduate of the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in 1899, he served churches in Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ======================== [Brydon] has been active in diocesan organizations, serving as Secretary and Treasurer of the Diocese of Virginia 1919-1940 and as Historiographer since 1924. In the latter capacity, he has written many historical articles.
